Re: [XP Pro] Can't Cancle Print Job This is an XP printer driver problem....not HP driver because I have HP Deskjet 882C. Great printer...had great HP software for 98SE and I could do a ton of stuff. HP assured me that this printer will work just fine with XP. They lied. They didn't bother to tell me that I would be forced to use the XP generic printer driver and that I would loose everything ....all the great abilities available for this printer when using HP software and HP driver under 98SE. I was furious when I found out how extremely limited this $300 printer is now under XP. I don't mind that it isn't a fast printer. What I do mind is that I can't do anything with it. I have no HP tools for the printer either.
I have this very problem of being unable to cancel a print job and I am using the Windows XP generic driver. I asked HP about this and they said this is a known bug. It is terrible as I can't cancel the print job no matter what I do. I hardly print now because I also can't print in grayscale and can't print on both sides unless I manually program the printer each time all because HP refused to make a driver for XP.
HP would have made a lot more money on ink sales to me if they had bothered to make an XP driver for this printer. I haven't bought ink in almost two years and I have no intention of buying another HP printer when someday I buy another.

I had the same problem as you. My Epson printer (which was a GREAT printer when it was bought in 1997 for over $500) worked just fine with the accompanying software on 98SE.
When I swapped over to XP I had to use the generic XP drivers as the Epson drivers wouldn't load with XP and even though Epson acknowledged that this was a known problem they didn't actually do anything to correct it. It lost a lot of it's functionality and also the ability to cancel a print. However, I don't blame this on XP, I blame Epson for failing to fix a problem. As the printer was over 6 years old by this time, I voted with my pocket and bought another printer, making sure it was anything but an Epson.
From what I've heard (from others)and found out (myself) about the HP printers since I've owned one (such as the inability to cancel a print not to mention the bloated software that inserts no less than 5 processes in the task manager) the next printer I buy will be anything but an Epson or an HP. |

kudos:4 | It is not per se an XP problem. It is the driver though for XP that is the problem. I didn't intend to imply that I "blame" XP and Microsoft. Of course not, I blame HP and I too will not be buying another HP. I was simply pointing out that the OP's problem was perhaps like mine, the forcing of the use of the generic XP driver, because the vendor figured if they didn't provide a driver for XP that users would buy a new printer from them.
My printer was four and one-half years old when I got my new XP Pro box. I think a $300 printer should last 6-7 years at least. This was not one of the el cheapo throw away printers you can find now at Walmart, etc. It was the latest and best of of the DeskJets when I purchased it. Had I spend $100 on a printer, I could see buying a new one at four years...a $100 one probably would have fallen apart by then (or before) anyhow.
What angers me the most was HP widely advertising that all their printers would work great with XP and that was a blatant lie. HP is known best for quality in its printers. The better ones can expect a ten year life and when I purchased this I was told I would get about ten years of use. That was a big selling point in my purchasing this one instead one of HP's cheapies. The printer works fine at six and one-half years just as HP said and I never had any problems with it other than the driver problem.
When I do buy another it will probably be a Dell.

I thought HP consumables were steep until I looked a the Dell consumables. |

I would before buying and I would read reviews of various printers, users comments, etc. I hope to use the current printer until I need a new computer and my XP box is not yet two years old....so I really don't know what I will buy at that time. Thanks for pointing out the Dell consumables price is high. I want to get an all in one (printer,scanner, copier) whenever I do buy.
