I said Opera introduces AD BLOCKING, not Opera is ad-free. Two different things. Although at this point, both of those may be happening. I wouldn't know

I only see on their website the browser is FREE I don't see anything about ad blocking.

Perhaps I'm missing something.

They said on their site they are removing their ad banner and the licensing fee. That pretty much means it's free now, not that it wasn't to begin with just with the annoying ad banner. Something's fishy here though. Why would they do this? I think Google or Yahoo is about to buy them. lmao

My bad. When I first saw "goes without ads" or whatever I thought they're introducing ad-blocking. Oh well, this isn't bad either

In fact, this is huge. I'll edit my post title.

Glad they fixed this :

Solved issue with Opera reverting explicit user setting to use program as handler rather than plug-in.

Re: [Update] Opera Goes FREE

Wow! I guess this answers my question from the other Thread for good. ( »[Opera] Fun while it lasted? )

Cool! Seems to me they had to do this eventually considering other "free" options.

Very interesting though how they pulled in a ton more users with their "one day only campaign", knowing all along that this was in the works.

If that's the case, still some amazing marketing.
More people are apt to give something new a try if they're getting a "special one day deal" than if it's just out there for the taking anyway and you're already happy with your present Browser.

People will take pretty much anything if it's "free".

At any rate, this is the best "Security update" they could have possibly had.....looks like I'm a permanent Opera user now (unless they do something radically bad in changing future versions, or I'm not reading between the lines somewhere).

Now, since I've never updated this thing before....anything special I should know? (I'll look into it in the mean time).

If no one read the release notes here they are »www.opera.com/pressrelea ··· 5/09/20/
The release notes might shed a little light on why it's free now.

I wonder if this is a permanent shift or a market shift. I also wonder if this will work or too little too late. Opera was making waves before they moved to the pay or adds model. That turned many away including myself. I think it can succeed if inovation continues and buzz can be created. The real question I have, I guess, is were the revenue is going to come from?

I think this will be permanant shift...as far as revenue, beats me.

On an unrelated note, I saw a complaint in the Opera Forums just now where a new install still identifies itself as IE.

One poster felt (and I agree), that it should definitely identify itself as Opera.....use and identification will increase dramatically around the internet.

For the record, mine remained identified as Opera where I had it, so maybe they were referring to a brand new install.

At any rate, they should fix that.

I think the difference is that the one day campaign was for a fully registered version that included support.

it seems Opera for mobile devices is not free, only the desktop versions...

No support came with the one day Opera 8.0 for free campaign. This info was posted in the other thread.

UPDATE! From the opera's CEO in Opera's IRC Channel:
" There have been many questions regarding the the free registration today. To clarify: the registration key will not expire. It will not make you eligible for Premium support either, you have to pay for that."

Good for updates! But no premium support.

Yes, Doctor Olds See Profile is correct.

As far as revenue, it's true there are many other ways they can still make money.

Beside the Mobile stuff, I wonder if they are giving you the "option" to "purchase" premium support even though it is now ad free...

(The page I linked to may not be fully updated yet).

This is a beutiful thing. Paid user since ver. 4.something or other.

Installed over the top of my older version okay. No issues yet. even kept my Feeds correctly.

A tip of the hat and a swooping bow to Opera.

Way to go....
