As opposed to leaving the US government and other services derailed by some future UN policy. No thanks. Oh please, don't be so dramatic. It's the Internet.
If some governing body runs amok and we don't like it (and assuming we don't bomb the shit out of them) we still have "our" network here and we could easily remedy this by taking control of any root DNS servers that are on our own soil.
But humor me, since everyone's so scared, what is the nightmare scenario that we would not be able to prevent? Can you name another such scenario of an ITU-ruled technology? Ruskies taking the "9" digit off of our phones? Help me out here. If we're going to be all scared of the ITU, I'd like to know what I'm supposed to be quaking in my boots over. |

First of all, your assuming the root DNS servers would stay here.
The nightmare scenario is the UN within about 4 seconds could shut the US or any other country off for that matter. Sure we could bomb our way back online, but not after billions of dollars went down the sewer. -- Get Your Posts Ranked At PoliticalFights.com! |

Sure we could bomb our way back online, but not after billions of dollars went down the sewer. So let me get this straight, the ITU (or as you like to keep saying "The UN") who typically can't make any decision in less than a few months would make a sweeping change in 4 seconds? And technically can you explain how they would "shut a country off"? How exactly would they do that? The internet is a collection of private networks driven by profit. Network operators have proven time and time again that they can work around stupidity when the shit hits the fan. We're entering tinfoil hat territory here... |

 | You, sir, are as big an ignorant idiot as they come. The U.N. wants control of the Internet so they can hold it over us -- no other reason. If you can disrupt or even cut off the flow of information to/from a country (specifically financial transactions) you can bring its economy to a grinding halt. This is reality -- something apparently you, like so many other liberal Dems, refuse to live in. |

I've been in the ISP business since 1996. Know what? I know more than you. I know that you folks are just spreading FUD. You don't know anything about the ITU, either it seems.
I will ask again: -TECHNICALLY, how would the UN "turn off the internet"? -If we don't care about the rest of the world or connecting to it, why do you care if that part of the internet is turned off? -How would the private sector here respond?
On the last one, there are plenty of examples in the last ten years of how private enterprise has worked around political issues. It's simple enough to be boring. |
