dvd536as Mr. Pink as they comePremium join:2001-04-27 Phoenix, AZ kudos:4 | [Info] Spinrite 6 Questions BEFORE purchase heres the story: - - I have this 80gb hard drive that has my music collection on it and started getting crc errors when any disk access was made to it then started having entire directory is unreadable errors. so i ran Encase on it and after it finished it got sector 32 to 15536 could not be read errors. now the message i get on boot is secondary slave hard disk fail. press F1 to continue. my interest in spinrite is only to recover this drive. does anyone know if you can get a refund of the purchase price (its $89.00) if you've used another utility on the drive before spinrite? I know they have a 30 day policy that has "any reason" you arent happy within 30 days you can get a refund. since spinrite has been around for years its the last option i want to try before giving up on the drive. has anyone here tried or know anyone thats tried to get a refund using the reason 'software was unable to recover the drive'.
there isnt a demo of this software is why im asking. - Thanks for any input you can give me on this. -- You can never be too rich, too thin or have too much Bandwidth |

| reply to dvd536 Contact the author, you may need to download Spinrite 5.0 (it's free for 6.0 users).
___________________________________________________________ SpinRite can run on any PC compatible system with a 32-bit Intel or AMD processor and a color screen. The previous SpinRite v5.0 is available to v6.0 owners who need to run SpinRite on older 16-bit 8086/80286 systems and/or monochrome screens.
SpinRite is self-contained, including its own bootable FreeDOS operating system. It can be used on any operating system and any file system. This means it can run on drives formatted with Windows XP's NTFS and all other older FAT formats (in addition to all Linux, Novell, and all other file systems.) It can be used to pre-qualify and certify unformatted hard drives before their first use. Drives on non-PC platforms, such as Apple Macintosh or TiVo, may be temporarily relocated to a PC motherboard for data recovery, maintenance and repair by SpinRite.
SpinRite provides complete interaction with IDE-interface PATA (parallel ATA) and SATA (Serial ATA) drives, and it can also be used with any other type of drive SCSI, USB, 1394/Firewire that can be made visible to DOS through the addition of controller BIOS or add-on DOS drivers. To obtain the best performance, IDE drives can be temporarily removed from their external USB or Firewire cases and attached directly to the PC motherboard. ____________________________________________________________ -- He is no fool who gives up what he cannot keep, to gain what he cannot loose. |

IME, anytime the bios saw the drive, spinrite would - unless it was a RAID setup, in which case, you had to remove the drives singularily from the RAID to run spinrite, then put them back together. -- Opera 8.5(Build 7700); Windows XP Pro SP2;Athlon 64 3400+; 1GB PC3200 DDR; 1M/128k DSL; NOD32(Version 2.5.25); Outpost Pro 2.7;Proxomitron 4.5j Grypen 8/28/05(Opera mod),GPG ID:0x0A1C6EE3 |

| Yes, if the BIOS can't see the drive, there's not much chance of any software seeing it, no matter how low-level the software is.

Tim Well how do these data recovery companies do it then. i assume it involves a cleanroom and removing the platters etc. . . -- You can never be too rich, too thin or have too much Bandwidth |
