The Lighting choke allows the 110V (neutral & 2 hot's one flashing and one steady) to cross the base insulator with minimal change in base Z, & radiation. That is an arc gap to give lightning someplace else to go rather than through the cap and other circuits, which it can and WILL do.

As for me I started playing with electronics when I was still in the single digits of age. By 15 I actually had a job as a "studio engineer" at a 1 KW radio station. Since then, I've continued on in the field and do broadcast radio engineering and all sorts of industrial electronics. This is my 30th year, of doing radio.
Certs include,
FCC, General Radio telephone, Ham Technician
SBE, Senior Radio Engineer
Hammond Organ Co, Technician
State of Florida , Firefighter, Paramedic, and Fire Officer 1 (that's what I do for fun :) )

There's more but that's enough to get the idea.

Background in Systems control, and automation, I designed an embedded Operator Interface Terminal, and am formally trained in computer electronics. My love is in "stupid little" discreet circuits that have virtually no value to anyone but me :)

Should be a nice place to stretch out, and query some like-minded individuals.
