anon : I just got my first A3AB BSOD. I had been using the superG cards for over a year without a problem. I went through similar issues as you way back when and never could get them running on the older PII compaq desktops my daughters had - had to give them newer PIII computers (i had some extra ones).

My point is that in the end, I found that the original drivers that came with the CD worked best for the G520 cards WITHOUT using D-Link install software or config utility. All systems are WinXP and I let windows wireless manage them. The driver version is 3.0.0.44 dated 10/22/2003, and we are able to run at 108Mbps. To re-install your card(s) this way, windows auto-detect should work after you uninstall the card. Just use the "have disk" option and point it to the folder with the drivers after a restart. Good luck.

ispalten : Just found this thread today...

My wife's machine just started hitting this 2 weeks ago... For the last 2 months or so, using FireFox 1.0.7, when she went to d/l a file it wouldn't complete. Her G520 was being controlled by the DLink utility. Other than that, no connection problems. I didn't have any inkling what was going on on her machine and I tried all sorts of stuff. Best guess was some 'malware' or TCP/IP damage. I could go to those sites and d/l without problems on my machine, so it wasn't the router. We use the same firewall and the settings were the same and nothing in her log to indicate a firewall problem It wasn't on all sites either, but a good many of them. Finally decided to look again and work on it. AD-AWARE and SPYBOT found some malware and I deleted them. She had umpteen toolbars too, and removed most of them. FireFox ran faster, but it didn't seem to solve the d/l problem much. So I decided to do what I had to do on my machine, use the WZC to control the connection (a G132). This presented a new problem however, she would have dropouts of the connection sporadically. Had to open the Windows Wireless Connections, drop the connection, and re-connect. Ran OK usually until the next boot, but occasionally it did drop out. Got tired of the complaints and decided to put back the DLink applet to control it. Well, for whatever reason, it didn't/couldn't install correctly. Deleted the files, removed the card, rebooted, reloaded drivers, re-installed the card, more than once. The DLink utility never appeared in the toolbar? Still dropped connections... and the BSOD's just like the ones here with A3AB.SYS started to happen. Cleaned out the registry and directories and re-installed, still happening. Reverted to hard wire connection now.

I have no idea what has happened, but it may be related to some malware she got. Some other STARTUP issues are there as well. Programs that had started do not now. PC Magazines STARTUP COP is in the mix here. It had been installed before (an older version) and had to also be un-installed before updating it. Problems arose after this was updated, but I can't blame it all on that.

Right now, no problems with a hard wired connection to the DI-624 running 2.70. My G132 is resonably stable, although I occasionally need to do the disconnect-reconnect act to get a good connection.

Any thoughs here? How can I really re-install the G520 and know it will work as it did before? Is there some special registry clean-up needed?

Thanks,
Irv
--
Irv Spalten

anon : After buying the DWL-G520 a month ago, I'd been wrestling with those blue-screen STOP errors that predictably occurred whenever running a BitTorrent client. Trying the most recent Atheros driver proved to be the last in a series of failures to find a solution this last month. Can't believe how much time I spent trying to solve the problem without success.

Anyway, I finally threw in the towel last week. Returned the Atheros-based card while I still could, and picked up a Motorola WPCI810G Broadcom-based one instead. It's cheaper and technically slower (54Mbps), but there hasn't been a single BSOD during the last 8 days, so I think I'm finally out of the woods. Plus, despite this card's weaker specs, bittorrent performance is definitely better now than it was using the D-Link, and so is the received signal strength from my DI-624 (perhaps due to the supplied antenna being substantially larger than the one provided with the G520). Go figure.

I can't say why things didn't work before, or even why this new card is working so well. All I will say is this: For anyone who has been dealing with frequent blue-screen crashes since acquiring a D-Link wireless device (or other Atheros-based card), maybe it's not a crime to just give up, wipe the slate clean and try something else entirely. It may not even be those company's faults, but either way, these crashes are a pretty substantial problem, and it's really not the end-user's job to troubleshoot the problem extensively, wherever the fault may lie. My 2 cents.

SelArom : hello! this is my first post (and first visit, actually!) to this forum, and I'm pleased that I'm not the only one going through this truly frustrating experience! I'm disappointed, however, that there doesn't seem to be a fix! :(

I have a DI-624 router and a DWL-G520 pci card. I've been getting the BSOD randomly (though not very frequently, maybe once or twice a week at most) and it always seems to happen when I have a lot of windows open, am downloading a lot of stuff, or am just generaly using my connection more than normal.

I've done the same steps as KillerFreak, I even installed the card into a new PCI slot. it still crashes randomly as described above. The funny thing is my laptop ALSO crashes randomly, and that has a DWL G650! this one doesn't crash as often (maybe once a month or less), and usually in the same conditions. I should also mention that the laptop crashed once at my university! same type of blue screen, same device driver a3ab.sys! what's up with that!!

and yes, EVERY TIME it happens, I cannot reconnect to the internet until I unplug and reconnect the router! funny thing is though the pc connected (wired) to the router doesn't ever lose its connection!! what gives!!

now, having read through the forums, I've seen a few others having similar problems to this talk about "changing to the atheros drivers". what does that mean, does it work, and where do I get them?

killerfreak are you still having this problem?

thanks for your help fellas!
-SelArom
