thully join:2005-08-13 Grass Lake, MI | [DW6000] Turning proxy off seems to improve many things... I had been running my DW6000 setup with the proxy ON for all computers - mostly for the simple reason that it supposedly speeds up DNS. However, as I'm using other wireless connections (non-DirecWay) more often on my laptop, and I'm having LOTS of problems with pages not loading and having to reset the modem often, I decided to try turning the proxy off.
So far, everything seems much improved. The setup seems more reliable, faster, and I haven't needed to reset the modem yet. Doesn't this sound weird? Maybe DirecWay has a reason other than VPN incompatibilities for recommending people turn the proxy off in the latest documentation... |

| Re: [DW6000] Turning proxy off seems to improve ma Check some of the 7000 posts, they are suggesting leaving the proxy off. I have tried it both ways and have turned all my proxies off since it seemed to make little difference and with it off I don't have to dink with the exceptions list. -- DirecWay 6000 CE, G4R/1230H, Linux, WiFi LAN, Vonage phone |

Re: [DW6000] Turning proxy off seems to improve many things... I agree with having almost no problems with Proxy OFF. I haven't tested it completely, but if the Proxy is OFF, Web Acceleration does not kick in (on my Mac). Right now I have a 66... WA address and it feels very slow. I want to do more testing when I get the 172... address again. -- Mike | C-COM, 1.80m Dish, DW6000 Small Office Plan, G11/1350, Signal 89, Airport EBS, AL Powerbook 15", iMac G5 20", OS 10.3.9-4.2, All Mac Browsers, EvoCam, Nikotel xLite, Skype, iChat, ohPhoneX, RE System. |

 | reply to thully I dont know about consumer, but when I upgraded to professional, the proxy no longer had any effect on my speeds. Now im always at 1Mbps down. Proxy on or off. Everything works better for me with the proxy off. Pages even come up faster. Maybe there is a different firmware for Pro accounts but both still show as the 4.3.2.7? It did do a firmware upgrade after recommissioning. All I know is switching to Pro has improved everything for me. |

Re: [DW6000] Turning proxy off seems to improve ma I've tried it with my local DNS server both on and off and it seems to make no real difference. I'm running the local DNS to make my LAN easier to deal with not for speed like with a 4000. -- DirecWay 6000 CE, G4R/1230H, Linux, WiFi LAN, Vonage phone |

This works the same with "plain" IE6 without the Maxthon front end. It is also repeatable with normal variation any number of times. I don't know just how long it has been this way for me, but it has been a LONG time.
Firefox has always been slower than IE on the testmynet site since I have been using it, and they had a blurb there recently that there was a problem with it.
FWIW.

Regardless of whether it was intended to, It always did. Maybe the quicker connection caused it to get better speed test results on testmy? I dont know. Does this look familiar? For me on my DW6000 Consumer setup, the IE6 TestMy.net download speeds have been slower with the Proxy OFF for quite some time. As you mentioned, Firefox is just plain slower than IE6 (Proxy ON) regardless of whether you do the test with the Firefox Proxy ON or OFF.

You can't turn the Web Acceleration (Turbo Page) proxy in the DW6000 off. It's always on (it's enabled at the NOC). What we're turning ON and OFF is the HTTP Proxy that's set up in the Browser. In IE6, go to "Tools - Internet Options" and click the "LAN Settings.." button on the Connections Tab. If the Proxy in the browser is set up and you put a check in "Use a proxy server for your LAN..." in the Proxy Server section, you're using the browser proxy. If you uncheck "Use a proxy server for your LAN...", you're not using the proxy. To set up the proxy in the browser , click the "Advanced.." button (in the Proxy Server section) and enter 192.168.0.1 , port 87 in the "HTTP:" box. -- DW6000 CE/Std on G4R/1370H, Gateway 66.82.156.27, Signal ~76, Wired LAN, 2-WinXP Pro w/SP2, 2-Win98SE |

Firefox is only 55%-60% as fast as MSIE whether or not you use a proxy. And appears to be only capable of very slow uploads regardless of proxy too.
On the other hand. WIth proxy off MSIE can be 10% slower to download, but 50% faster to upload than Firefox using testmy.net, or if you believe speakeasy.net it's up to 10 times faster without the proxy! |
