JoelC707 : Sorry this is so long, it's pretty much my background not just where I currently work.

Hey guys, have been reading here for a while and just recently started posting stuff. I have been working with computers since I was about 10 years old or so. I'm 21 and up until this job I have never had an "official" job (by official I mean one with taxes taken out and the like). The most I did was lawn maintenance for my grandparents and a select few others.

I've gotten my hands dirty in pretty much everything from a Commodore 64, to DOS, Win 3.1 and NT 3.51 up to XP/2003. I haven't played with Vista yet, primarily becuase my dad has yet to be able to get it to load on his computer but then he was trying Beta 1, maybe Beta 2 will have more luck. I've also been into unix, linux, Solaris, and Cisco routers. I've got access to a lot of older routers and Sun equipment (2514, AS2511-RJ, uBR904, 2611, AS5200, 7507, SPARC 4/5, Ultra 1, Ultra 2) to play with. I actually prefer the hardware aspect of computers more than administration, and I can not stand programming.

I'm the IT dept. for a very small company (8 employees and I don't even know how many contractors), owned by a friend I have known for years at my church. I got involved with them one night becuase he asked me if I could help spec out their first server (they had a colocated box for years but that was about it). He is no clouch when it comes to using computers so he is my backup now if I an unavailable. I actually ended up specing out the entire server room for them.

Did some "consulting" for them for about a month and he and I determined what fit their needs right then and planning for the long run. After it was determined what they need he mentioned that they would need someone to run all of it and wanted to know if I knew anyone that could do it. I was 19 at the time (21 now), had never had an "official" job in my life and actually needed one. Naturally I said yes, and he was actually expecting and hoping it would be me.

I manage 6 servers, about 10 desktops, a few laptops and even a few think clients (newer ones run XP Embedded). And I am working on setting up VPN tunnels to 6 of the employees houses (they all work from home and connet through Citrix/TS). Almost all of our servers, desktops and laptops are Dell; there is one server that was built by me. The thin clients are either Wyse or HP (I like the HP's muuch better than the Wyse ones. I've got a HotBrink VPN 800/2 firewall protecting everything. We just recently moved into a new suite (actually took two suites and cut a case opening between them). At our old suite we had a total of 6 network jacks, at the new suite I ran 20 plus 16 phone. It took myself and another employee a day just to pull all the lines. Then it took me another two days to terminate them all. I ran my own phone lines becuase I want to upgrade to a VoIP PBX (probably asterisk) in the near future plus the existing stuff was a complete mess.

roc5955 : Hi,
My name is Rocco Rizzo. I work for Dutchess County in Poughkeepsie, NY. My formal title is "Microcomputer / Network Support Specialist." My informal title is "if it's on a PC, YOU own it."
This job is really a hobby that went bad.
I have been in my current position for some 15 yrs now. I saw the PC XTs, PS2s, and 486s come and go. I even saw a couple or three S390s come and go. Not to mention the old RISC box that just takes up space any more.
Originally I designed our first LAN, to deal with 30 people in the IT shop. It was Token Ring 16/4 and Netware 2. That was about 10 or so years ago. Within the past 5-6 yrs, we have built a WAN with over 1700 workstations and about an equal number of Microsoft Servers. I think we even have an MS server that serves toilet paper.
Our shop is a small programming / support house for the County. It started out many years ago, with COBOL, and hasn't moved on much, had it not been for >gak Visual Basic. I am not a programmer, I am a tech, and builder. But I am expected to handle every computer problem under the sun, and then some.
We jumpped off of the IBM ship, to get onto the MS ship oh about 5 or 6 yrs ago. At that time I was frantically building a WAN with stone knives and bear skins.
Finally, we got some help. The PC Orphans, as I call my group have grown from 2, when I started in 1991 to 8 today.
So I troubleshoot the WAN, PCs, and users. It pays the bills, has benefits and a pension, and isn't moving to China soon.

I am responsible for everything and nothing. It seems that management calls on me when things go wrong, not when they are starting something new. On every occasion that I was asked to work on some project, my input was rejected by management, because the words were not the words that they wanted to hear. When the brown noses in the group took over the projects, they worked for a while, and when they broke, management called on me to fix them. I was then given broad latitude to do whatever I saw fit to allieviate the problem, within reason.
Now a days, I generally wait around for work, whatever it is. Last week I had to extract and dispose of vermon from a PC, because it was below the other people in the group, and my manager has it in for me.
I can't quit the place, Civil Slavery you know. We have to be bought and sold. So I am here for the duration. What the heck, I only have 12 yrs to go.

I still like to play at home with my little network. It keeps me off the streets. Since I am single, I have the luxury of being able to have my network where I want it, and as big or as small as I want it. Right now there is one Suse 9.0 server, 3 workstations. 1 XP Pro, 1 Win2K Pro, and one SUSE 9.0. I have an old HP Laserjet 5P, and a Deskjet 890 printer hooked up as well. I get my service from Time Warner. I got Road Runner about 3 minutes after the trucks left my road, in their final testing.

I come here to read the news, and figure I can help out most Windoze users. I still am no Linux whiz. The Suse box is just a big fileshare machine.
Not sure what else you would like to know about me, other than I used to be the Pres. of the Hudson Valley PC Users Club in the 90s for a couple of years, and helped to run a couple or 3 BBSes before that. All told, I have been messing with PCs for about 25 yrs now. I guess I am a lifer.
Thanks for the space, I hope I can be an asset, though occasionally, I tend to lose the "et" from it.

TTFN, HAGD, CUL8R, YMMV, LSMFT

Rocco Rizzo
Rosendale, NY

army dude : I started out with a company that had a contract with the Army to run their network at an Orlando, Fl location. I started on the help desk, with 4 of us supporting about 1000 users. The Orlando site has around 90 servers, mostly Windows, some Unix. I had moved up to tier-2, desk side tech support at the Orlando site when this job I have now became available here at Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville AL.

It is a remote extension of the Orlando network, 10 servers, including 1 DC and 1 Exchange server. About 70 users, some mobile with laptops, a few with BlackBerrys, also. Dial-up radius server (cisco AS5300), three buildings connected together with MM fiber, cisco 3550 switches, a couple old 2900 XL switches, a Symantec 5400 series SGS firewall appliance.

Doesn't sound like much, but I am the only IT guy here, so between help desk calls from the customers, maintaining the servers and switches and firewall, and the dial-up equipment, along with all the normal duties, (software deployments, security scans and patches, etc.) it keeps me busy. Plus, I am on call 24/7, but I rarely get weekend or after hours calls.

The only time it seems to be overwhelming is new computer time. We upgrade the fleet about once every three years, and I have to create an image for each platform (desktop and laptop) and then image and deploy around 70 laptops and desktops (new monitors, too) by myself. That usually takes about three long weeks. The worst part is carting each machine to it's cubicle from the staging area. Keep in mind I'll still be answering help desk calls while this is going on. (damn the cell phone!)

I look forward to new server time, that is actually fun time. I am told that the next server upgrade here, I will be getting blade servers and a new enclosure.
