rperkin : The DSL-G604T router has a built-in ADSL modem. It routes between the WAN (the ADSL phone connection) and the LAN (Ethernet + wireless).

Do I understand correctly that you do *not* have an ADSL enabled phone line?

If you do, then you should connect the phone line to the router. If you do not have an ADSL connection, then you *cannot* use the DSL-G604T as a router (since, as I said above, it routes between the ADSL connection and the LAN connections). However, you can still use it as an Ethernet switch + access point.

You mention a dial-up connection and using ICS. ICS is a software router + DHCP server. It gives the PC on which it is running a local IP address of 192.168.0.1 and hands out IP addresses in the 192.168.0.x range via DHCP. I understand that there is a limit to the number of addresses it will hand out (is it 10?) but this should be sufficient for a small home network.

The 192.168.0.1 'gateway address' you are seeing is that of the ICS PC - it is the 'gateway router' between your LAN and the public Internet.

To use the DSL-G604T as a switch + access point in an ICS configuration, you need to:
- give the DSL-G604T a static IP address in the same subnet. I suggest you use 192.168.0.100 or similar

- disable its DHCP server

- connect the ICS PC to one of its Ethernet ports

The config interface for the DSL-G604T differs depending on which firmware you are using - I don't know what version is installed in US-spec models. On mine (I'm in the UK) the options you should change are:
- on the Home | LAN screen, set IP Address = 192.168.0.100
This will be a static IP address since it is out of the range allocated dynamically by ICS

- on the Home | DHCP screen, select No DHCP.
This will disable the device's DHCP server, leaving this function to ICS

Notes:
1. You should not need to use (and probably cannot use at the same time as ICS) the AnalogX proxy. Disable it.

2. You will not be using the router's NAT and firewall functions - you are relying on ICS for routing + NAT, and whatever software firewall is running on the ICS PC to protect your network from incoming 'baddies'

3. You should enable wireless security on the DSL-G604T
- on the Home | Wireless screen, ensure that 'Enable AP' is checked, that you do *not* enable 'Hidden SSID'. Give the device an SSID to identity your network
- select Security = WPA, then select 'PSK String' and enter a long (20 character) text string containing non-dictionary words. Configure the same WPA-PSK setting and key string value on each wireless PC
- don't bother with MAC address filtering (the DSL-G604T config refers to this as 'Access List'), which can be found on the Advanced | Wireless Management screen. It offers such limited protection as to be worthless

Only enable wireless security when you are happy that things are working. Before that, run with no security for a short period - it's very easy for config errors in security setting to confuse things and make it seem like the device isn't working...

Remember that the ICS PC will need to be on at all times to allow Internet access o other PCs. If you can get ADSL enabled on your phone line you can use the DSL-G604T in its intended role as a router, which will be considerably more efficient.

Hope this helps - let us know how you get on

surenmsr : HI ,
I am having Wireless router from D link 640T .
We have Dialup internet connection to my desktop. I am having laptop with wireless connection. I am able to access the internet in my laptop using AnalogX proxy on my desktop. Problem is in accessing Yahoo voice. So i thought of removing Proxy server and planned to setup ICS using windows. Problem started here.

By befault windows setting my desktop network card ip address as 192.168.0.1 and asking to setup DHCP for other systems in the network.

I tried to change Default Gateway of my router from 10.0.0.1 to 192.168.0.2 and DHCP range from 192.168.0.3 - 0.5 . But it is not allowing me to change the Gateway to that IP address, as i did not have much exp in Networking i understood that Gateway will take only intial IP address ( 192.168.0.1 worked fine).

Now how can i get using windows Internet Connection Sharing.

Details Below:

Router :
Default Gateway:10.0.0.1
DHCP : 10.0.0.1 to 10.0.0.10

Desktop: 10.0.0.2 (Force Static Ip because i am using Proxy)
(Connected to Wireless router using Wired)

Laptop wireless : DHCP.

Can some one please help me in configuring ICS for my small network.

Regards
Surendra
