Re: Need to switch between Interleave and FastPath AFAIK, mine seems alright, but could I get a 3rd-party opinion? |

 | reply to drake i called several times, only one person had heard of the term fastpath before, but suprinsgly the technician researched up, probably embarrased that a customer knew more than them, and after about 3 calls i got a lvl 3 tech to help me out with the aid of the central office and everything went fine, 1st hop is now 8-9ms instead of 25-26ms, so overall happy, my advice is to be persistent as everyone else hear has said |

 | reply to drake Yeah, I just recently upgraded to 3/800 or whatever it is... That was cool. However, ping times are still poor. Here are my statistics. I can move the modem around a bit to improve the Up Margin... But I would need some more hardware to do that, so at the moment I cannot.
What do you guys (And possibly girls) think?

Easy switch, so far. Just called Verizon, got a technician. I said "interleave" and "FastPath", and she said she'd never heard of either term, but she did some reading of their intranet site and then talked to someone, came back and said they could make the switch, but that it would be a "one-time" change--which seems bizarre, because why would someone need to switch endlessly back and forth between interleave and FastPath?
Anyway, after a few minutes of her wrestling with her computer I got a ticket and informed that the networking group would make the change within 24 to 72 hours. No change to my speeds, she said, though it might get "faster". No need to reboot.
We'll see how it is after it gets turned on. I'm at about 42-45 ping to my first hop, and 6000 feet from my CO on a 3meg down/768 up line. I'd post my full modem stats, but that feature doesn't work on a Mac, so I don't know how my line noise is--I only hope that Verizon checks it when they make the change, but I've always had good throughput, so I'm not unduly worried.
Hopefully this won't become a nightmare, but I have to say that getting switched to FastPath was, so far, very easy. Took a total of 20 minutes and one phone call. |

They either say that as a scare tactic, or because they don't want to have people needlessly changing back & forth. |
|
 | Well, it's just hours later, and I think the switch has gone through. Since I can't get a direct reading out of my modem, I can only tell by my ping times, which have dropped by 50% across the board--I presume this is the effect of FastPath.
Browsing is faster, and my throughput is slightly higher--after running a battery of speed tests, i seem to be getting 5-8% better download speeds than previously, and upstream is unchanged.
So far, I'm very happy I called. |

Re: Need to switch between Interleave and FastPath great info in this thread, thanks everyone. i've wanted fastpath after suffering with a 27ms first hop my entire time with VZ (what's funny is a VZ tech told me anything under 350 is perfectly acceptable, hehe. he couldn't understand that even ~25 is much too high for the first hop). i'm a gamer first and foremost, and it's always made me angry that i had an inflated ping when it didn't have to be that way.
well, now that verizon - the northeast and Maine in particular - has been having horrible problems for the last week or so, i am just mad enough to demand what i want, and get it or else. have a look at this thread: »[speed/latency] High latency, slow speeds... - even if you don't live in the northeast, it's interesting - and infuriating, trust me.
assuming you all tell me my line stats are good, i'll have fastpath or VZ will lose a customer. i will not stop hassling them until both the recent problems are fixed and i get my fastpath (if i qualify):
-------
Transceiver Revision: 01.00.09.00 Vendor ID Code: 4 Line Mode: G.DMT Mode Data Path: Interleaved Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 3360 864 Margin (dB) 18.5 11.0 Line Attenuation (dB) 37.5 19.0 Transmit Power (dBm) 16.8 11.0
-------
according to what i read in this thread, my numbers look quite good. but i'd appreciate a confirmation on that. thanks! |

Re: Need to switch between Interleave and FastPath? About 15 minutes on the phone with level one tech support. I did my best to explain it as clearly as possible. Since he had me repeat "Interleaved" and "Fastpath" I don't think he had ever heard of them before. He put me on hold for a couple minutes, came back and said he had to have someone set it up and put me on hold again. Came back again, said someone will call me "soon" when it is set up. I've got my fingers crossed! |

JohnAPremium join:2003-09-16 Pittsburgh, PA | Fast Path was the default, until they offered the 3M/$30 plan in NY and NJ. If you got 3.0 service when it first came out, you would be on Fast by default.
Occasionally, during provisioning, someone's line stats are excellent and they will be provisioned on Fast Path. That's more dependent on who is doing the provisioning on your line.

Re: Need to switch between Interleave and FastPath? Lol, my first hop pings are like 110+ during primetime now, thats just because i live in the freakshow that is called maine. Verizon has abondoned us it seems, we're getting no love here I know my line is good for fastpath, but im getting the 3.0m free upgrade tomarrow or the next day and if that works out ok i will harass verizon to get me on fastpath, or loose a customer. Im quite frustrated at this point because of these ping times since Nov 22-23.
Verizon's philosophy "Lets sell all our bandwith in maine and not upgrade the backbone system so that those damn hicks up there can not only freeze to death but suffer from BF2 withdrawl" damn them i say...damn them :/ |

LOL - Its FASTCHANNEL not FastPacket... There's only two provisioning settings you can select when configuring the users profile.. Fast Channel and Interleave.. and yes by default it is Interleave but thats exactly the type of protocol that a user wants to get.. if you reach a tier 3 tech have them place you on fast channel [takes about 20 seconds to switch a customer over] and then perform you little STAT'S TEST.. and note the performance loss in noise margin and in attenuation. |

Re: Need to switch between Interleave and FastPath? Performance Readings Should Be as Follows with any profile package.
Data Path - Interleave - [Fast Channel will drop performance readings TRUST ME!!]
*Noise Margin - Above 6DB on Both DOWNSTREAM & UPSTREAM
*Line Atten - The Lower the better. If your going above 70db then there is an issue thats needs to be addressed
*Transmit Power - DOESNT MATTER - Unless your going into one of those cheap surge protectors that is causing your transmit to have a 0 or 1.
*NOTE* TAKE NOTE that no matter what speed package you have verizon always provisions your speeds with a higher package. but you will not notice the increase with speeds on your network. for example 3meg cust. performance test indicate 3360 / 864kbps but you will only download with a max bit rate of 3m/768kbps... give or take a few. |
