Re: DRM implementors == black hats

Great piece from the BBC.

snip.

"Justice Ian Binnie of the Supreme Court of Canada raised this concern in a copyright case several years ago when he noted that "once an authorised copy of a work is sold to a member of the public, it is generally for the purchaser, not the author, to determine what happens to it".

In a press conference held on Nov 18 Cary Sherman, the president of the RIAA, stated in reference to Sony BMG's "rootkit" software that "there is nothing unusual about technology being used to protect intellectual property." According to Sherman, the problem with Sony BMG's XCP DRM software was simply that "the technology they used contained a security vulnerability of which they were unaware". He goes on to praise Sony's "responsible" attitude in handling the problem, saying "how many times that software applications created the same problem?"

The law firms of ... and Lerach, Coughlin, Stoia, Geller, Rudman and Robbins, LLP, joined EFF in the case.
Well so much for a principled case: I don't know anything about the first law firm, but Bill Lerach is a legal dirtbag of the highest order and has never met a scruple he couldn't evade. This guy gives opportunism a bad name, and his involvement puts a nasty stink on the whole matter.

Yuck.

Hi sharpy merc,

This is a popular misconception !

Copyrighted material is owned by the copyright holder/s, this may or may not be the Author/Writer.

If you buy a CD/DVD/Record/Picture/Poster/Book/Magazine etc etc, all you actually own is the Plastic/Paper.

The contents are not owned by anyone except as stated above.

If copyrighted material is actually sold, then that will be as part of some contract between the parties involved, and in that case the purchaser/s will be NEW owner/s.

In some cases authors can still retain certain rights.
