NYC Metro | Good News! On Par With FIOS? Good news....
They had to do something. They are losing broadband customers FAST to Verizon FIOS in NY/NJ/CT. The 15/2 matches FIOS, but will it compete with reliability/speed? 15/2 may turn out to be only 11mbps/1.5mbps... Not like FIOS that is pretty much over capped to provide overhead. Will they cap you if you upload? I bet they will on 15/2, but probably won't on the new 30mbps and 50mbps tiers unless you abuse it. Right now they cap for the SMALLEST usage of upload bandwidth. If this new dedicated network they unveiled for 50mbps can handle it hopefully they won't cap someone if they dare use the connection to upload a few GB's or something. Large file transfers are becoming the norm now. ISP's need to stop acting like we only download and don't produce. It is good news that they are providing Port 80 services also.
Apparently, from what I read it says it is available across the network right now. I'll have to call and check. I don't know if this will keep me from Verizon FIOS, but if it doesn't become available before FIOS is here I am springing for FIOS!

Most people interested in broadband want more bandwidth. Less for less money isn't the capitalistic way.

there's no FIOS in NYC yet. OO has no reason to panic when it comes to the crown jewel, CV's assets in NYC.
PS: the earliest date I heard for en masse FIOS availability in NYC was 2nd half of 2006 - CV has plenty of times to go even higher if necessary.
However the main question remains the price point, that's what people really care about. |

FIOS was heavily marketed in Cablevision areas.
Frankly, now its not about the speed but the perception of value for your money. I always contemplated a time where we started talking megabyte per dollar in terms of value.
DOSCIS 3.0 is coming very shortly, the standards are all but done. I expect more of this in the near future in other areas in 2006.
What I think people don't realize is that Cable could easily put an end to DSL in the North East. Since Verizon backed all its money into FIOS.
Cablevision covers a very small area of the U.S. Plus I suspect that Cablevision needs to hold on to customers for an eventual sale of assets. The Dolan's are probably going to look to sell Cablevision. |
