Kewl - check that link I made:

»securityresponse.symantec.com/av···pav.html

You should check that to make sure any remnants aren't left behind. After that, I think you are good to go.

No matter how many machines I clean, I am always amazed just how scummy the purveyors of this crap really are...a "anti-spyware" company that installs ad-aware (certainly seems like it in this case) - how pathetic.

I think I found it:

»securityresponse.symantec.com/av···pav.html

I noticed "svchosts.dll" on the OP's system and used KillBox to remove it.
Hmmm... I didn't see that 'dll' in any of his log postings...Must have missed it somewhere.

Wonder if the 'Ole NyQuil Kid AVCD' would have caught that trojan?

Actually his original posting did not incorporate hidden/system files - the svchosts.dll was hidden...

Hehe - I certainly hope the AVCD would have found it - I have a copy of the dll and will test it on a VMWare install.

OK, I have the exact same spyaxe spyware crap on my computer as madblue. I read your info and was excited to see that he got his problem fixed. However, I cannot understand what you guys did to fix it. Can someone indicate what the solution turned out to be?

Thanks!

Hey there - check the following link:

»securityresponse.symantec.com/av···pav.html

And show all hidden and system files, then look for a file called svchosts.dll (either in C:\Windows or C:\Windows
System32) - chances are that file is there and in use. I would recommend you use a program called "KillBox" to delete the file, since it will be in use at the time.

Joshua-

@comcast.net

I am having the same issue. I have been relentlessly working since last night reading forum after forum, and scanning with any "legit" well known spyware/virus scanner I've heard. This little balloon here, with the SpyAxe crap will not die. I read on Symantec's site that it injects itself into explorer.exe? If that's the case, why haven't any scans found it? Additionally, Ewido, HouseCall, Symantec, and ZoneAlarm a/v haven't found a lick of it. Thorough system scans reveal nothing anymore, save for cookies. The thing pops up in safe mode, as well.

Okay, nevermind; now I made myself look like an idiot. I reread the instructions and figured out a bit I was confused about - all is well. Thanks!

Easy Spyaxe solution

Some people (not me LOL) had the courage to ask SPyAxe's customer service & they SAY that some third-party marketer has is responsible for this mess, not SpyAxe (sounds like a nice excuse, anyway-- I don't believe them). Anyway, they have a uninstall program to get rid of the problem, so here's the quick & easy solution

1) Save Uninstallers.zip from »www.spyaxe.com/uninstall/uninstallers.zip to your desktop.

2) Extract 2 files "illegal_adv_uninstall1.exe" and "illegal_adv_uninstall2.exe" to your desktop using WinZip.

3) Double-click one file, then the next (nothing visible will happen. (these files ARE clean BTW)

4) Reboot your PC

5) For myself, I had to go to add/remove programs & uninstall SpyAxe.

6) Search for svchosts.dll & delete it. (NOTE: DO NOT confuse this with svchost.exe!!!!)

7) You should now be virus free!

I just sent SpyAxe a really nasty e-mail telling them their reputation is being soiled by this illegal marketing ploy-- I don't give a damn who is responsible. I noticed just in the past few days on Google this problem keeps spreading. Looks like they just shot themselves in the foot. They deserve it.

Re: y windows show "Your Computer is infected"

I haven't used Killbox, but I was able to get rid of the svchosts.dll on an XP PC by booting into "Safe Mode with command prompt", and running:
del c:\windows\system32\svchosts.dll

In order to clean your PC from infections related to Spyware Axe product, please
follow the instructions below:

1) Save Uninstallers.zip from »www.spyaxe.com/uninstall/uninstallers.zip
to your desktop or HDD.

2) Extract 2 files "illegal_adv_uninstall1.exe" and "illegal_adv_uninstall2.exe"
to your desktop or your HDD using WinZip.

3) Execute both of them one by one by double-clicking with your mouse.

4) Reboot your PC

5) Your PC is now clean from the infections.

As this thread illustrates, begin with the steps as outlined here »Security »I think my computer is infected or hijacked. What should I do? and if you still need assistance, start your own thread and the experts will be along shorty:)
