Re: Farewell to Broadbandreports.com said by TexasGuy: Limiting name to DSL is bad. What if DSL will become less used in the next 2 years with Wi-Fi and fiber strongly coming into the market.
As I understand it, the name will remain BroadbandReports, but the domain will redirect to DSLReports. So, someone who has never been here types "FIOS" or "WiFi" into goog, and the top hit will be BroadbandReports with an excerpt about FIOS or WiFi, and will show a DSLReports addy.

Anyone looking at this will understand that the subject they are looking for will be discussed. What the actual addy is is not that crucial considering everything else that is part of the search results. -- Get your daily dose of wonder from the Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD).

I know I sound like an idiot but view it this way. Alot of sites I visit, and keep visiting are based on the look of the frontpage, and the name must describe what the website is about. I hate when websites choose a certain name that describes one thing when there website isn't based on that one thing.
You would be surprised by the amount of people I talk to about this site. If I tell them just visit dslreports.com like I use to do, they tell me, "well I can't get dsl were i'm at." I tell them its not just about dsl, its more than that. If I tell someone just go to broadbandreports they usually allready know what its about.
It confuses people. You wouldn't believe how many people don't even own a computer or an internet connection.
People can get turned off by visiting a site based on the name. I've seen it happen alot. |

I think what you forget is you can still tell people to go to Broadbandreports.com and the name on the logo will remain broadbandreports.com the url will simply redirect to the url of dslreports.com they will most likely not know the difference.
When DSLR changed to BBR I stilled use the dslreports.com url and it worked and that all that matters and now it going back to dslr but the bbr will continue to work and not have an issue. I just wish all you people would actually read what going to happen. |

Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 | reply to Cudni It is interesting to me how Google ranks this site based on the search terms I tried:
broadband choices - (Australian broadband) page 2. Listed as dslreports.com. No other mention in first ten pages.
cable modem - halfway down page 5. (Interesting that of the three sponsored choices at the top, number 2 is my local DSL provider even though the search term was for CABLE. I guess they paid to be on the page for cable searches as well as DSL). Listed as dslreports.com.
broadband - first link (is to a news article) listed as dslreports.com
broadband reviews - first page (# 7) listed as dslreports.com
broadband discussion - page 2 (#24) listed as broadbandreports.com
dsl - first link as dslreports.com
History is always important. Back when I wanted broadband, there was only dsl here and I was assured I could get it until General Telephone Co. actually sent someone out to physically determine if I could get it and I was too far away. DSL was available about three or four years before cable became available. So, the logical thought process would be dsl=broadband. When cable modem finally came to this city, I typed in "dsl" to look for reviews of Road Runner. It made perfect sense then. Google is built on history and nothing will change that. Newbies need to know some history or they will be condemned to repeat it.

People said that when the name Broadbandreports was first used here, also, instead of DSLreports. But there was no noticeably dropoff in use of the site. There won't be any noticeable dropoff in the use of the site due to this change. Doesn't anybody else's browser fill the addy? I only get as far as "ds" and the rest is right there. |

 | reply to Cudni This is why google sucks. And dont they claim to update EVERYTHING every 45 days? (eyeroll) anyway, I think the site should drop both and buy that cheese and wine site. bbr.com is easiest to type!

The dslreports name is rated higher on Alexa, and is (as far as I know) more valuable with AdWords. PR itself is overrated, and doesn't have as much to do with actual serps ranking as one might think. Besides, a site like this with as many external links pointing to it as it surely does should be able to recoup its PR pretty fast.
I'm not exactly sure how AdWords figures into this. Do you mean that a bid on the keyword "dslreports" is higher than "broadbandreports"? Whether that or something else, I don't see why the owners of this site should care, unless I'm missing something obvious (which I probably am...lol).
I think it's a shame that the owners of a site with the history and respect of this one feel it's necessary to ignore the future and tie itself to less desirable a domain name all in an effort to play by the nearly-monopolistic Google's everchanging and ill-defined rulebook. As a webmaster, I know how frustrating and usually fruitless that can be. |
