Agreed -- but that is why you partner with companies that have already done so.

I don't expect it to be built in a day, but they have been touting widespread rollout for well over a year now, not to mention touting about utilizing an existing infrastructure through Phonoscope.

Beta testing is just that...making sure everything is working perfectly before going public and having to deal with headaches and unhappy customers.

As far as the competition remarks go, as I mentioned before those companies are not offering fiber "DIRECT" unless they are taking over a new fiber subdivision. They will have a hub in the subdivisions and run coaxial from the hub to your home. That's called compression and that limits services that Fision is able to provide through zero compression. If you want the benefits of Fision right away then move to an all fiber community.

I really don't want to switch to TWC/Comcast from my Dish but I am really tired of the Dish and the equipment. Plus I want high quality picture, DVR and fast interent. Right now I have to get all of that separate. I have considered moving to cable just to get the DVR. If I compare costs, it comes out about the same for comparable channel lineup and internet compared to my separate TWC internet and Dish costs.

As much as I don't like AT&T, either. The service looks to be want I want right now. So, guess I'll just have to check next week or so and see where it is available (probably not in my area... LOL).

There is a $149 package that has a Showtime/Encore or HBO/Cinemax option, etc. Internet is around $29 I believe and the HD package is only $10 extra.

I could get the top package which has ALL channels including every single movie channel in existence, 10mb, and unlimited phone for around $169...that's the biggest package they have according to the install slip I got. That's a lot less that what I am spending now for those things and I don't have nearly as many channels or capabilities.

The movie channels come in crystal clear and Fision is not even producing the HD signal yet. When they go live they will have the highest amount of HD channels offered in Houston...uncompressed! In fact they will offer the highest amount of channels in general as a result of no compression. They are piping 14 HBOs and 16 Showtimes for example...I had no idea there were that many!

I have also learned they will have a Tevo feature, but it will be linked to the server with ample space meaning no need for additional hardware. All your favorites, recordings, etc. will be saved on the server so if a box goes out no biggie...server is also backed up. I've had Tevo with Dish Network for about 3 years and the boxes are already acting strange and I lost all the recordings on one. Also I can only go back 1 hour when I'm watching a channel for over an hour. Apparently you can go back 48hrs with Fision according to a tech guy that was over at my house last week troubleshooting my VPN. Public addresses will be active by Monday so that should fix that problem. Other than that it's been smooth sailing.

The fiber will go direct to a hub in the community. The community will connect to the hub via "gulp" coaxial. David Copperfield could not get an uncompressed TV signal, 10mb symmetrical connection, and phone through a coaxial. If it could be done there would be no need for Fision. AT&T will claim its an improvement and I don't doubt it will be, but there is no substitution for fiber direct to the home. Fision knows this and in running with it. Props to me for buying in a fiber communtity and if the country over the next 10 years shows as much interest in fiber as this board does then maybe I will make money on a house in Houston for once.

Surprisingly Fision has had little problems during the beta test. I am having an issue with my VPN, but that’s mainly because the IP address during this test is private. They will issue public addresses once they go live...I'm working with them to see if I can get a temporary public address in the meantime. All in all I will save about $100 a month going with Fision and the benefits are endless. I'll be interested in seeing what they will charge for additional bandwidth. Keep in mind that going from decent bandwidth to obscene bandwidth generally has no effect on ping. A 256K+ dedicated connection can have the same ping to a server as a 10 mbit symmetrical connection.

That has to do with what the competitors offer. RR SATX is competing against AT&T's "Project Lightspeed" (offered in parts of Dallas and the mid cities as well). With no similar AT&T roll out planned here, there is little market incentive for TW to boost speeds. Welcome to Duopoly.

But don't feel left out. Most cablecos are only boosting speeds where Verizon FiOS is rolling out, or as in NYC, a large regional independent like Cablevision has established marketshare thru higher speeds.

Both cablecos and telcos also seem to eager to jump in somewhere once a municipal system or franchise is gearing up as well.

Spoke briefly with Chris (head of sales) and briefly this is what I learned:

He asked what part of town I lived in -- I responded Meyerland area. (Long pause) told him it was near the Astrodome. His response was two years (read above for similar answer for Northwest Houston as well).

I asked him if they were still partnered with Phonoscope to utilize their fiber and if he knew if there was more coverage then their website shows (granted this is probably an unfair question to him, but Phonoscope isn't answering...). He didn't have any clue.

He mentioned that there were two channels that they want to secure for their offering that they have not been able to get yet -- he did confirm that one was ESPN when I asked him.

I asked him if they had considered simply offering their internet services alone before they tie up all the cable legalities (trying to see if it was just that part that was really holding them up). He said it was going to be all at the same time. i.e. if they can't roll it all out -- they won't roll anything out.

I have written this guy about once a month since learning of the service in December (just like everyone else). I truly think the major hang-ups they are experiencing are mostly related to licensing/contracts for cable channels (think = ESPN, MTV, CNN, FOXNews, etc.)

I guess they feel rolling out their service before securing these "big boy" channels -- even with a superior internet service -- would not be a good decision.

Really == if you were looking for a cable service and they didn't offer ESPN or Headline News would you sign up? Granted, the folks that are reading this would be mostly interested in that delicious upload/download speed, but I would never sign the dotted line for a cable co. that didn't give me ESPN HD. Anyway, the 18 month install time is reasonable because (again, this is speculation on my part) they need to figure out how to get the thing installed. Even if they've covered that, chances are they don't have too many crews to do this.

It looks like this service will be mostly for apartment complexes. Wiring an entire apartment complex with a small crew tends to take a while. Also, it won't be true FTTH that way - maybe fiber to your building ... but no fiber to your actual unit. It wouldn't make sense to take it that far.

"Fision" is sounding more boring by the minute.

Most people in Houston have fiber on (or very close to) their block. Getting it into your home is the tricky part.

The 18 month estimate is reasonable, especially since this company has been in business a little over a year. To me it still seems like they don't have a clue how to handle things such as installations.

I'm so excited because the guy said the pricing will be below all the current TV, internet, and phone charges combined in one month (TWC,Verizon). The guy was so excited to give me some great news but he wasn't allowed to discuss it. They are keeping it quiet until they are done with testing and ready to go production wise.

I'm starting to think they may end up being better than Verizon Fios. Even on the TV, if you need customer support, their technology will connect you to a live rep on tv, and you can see the rep on talking to you. They rep can also see your tv screen so they know exactly what to do. I mean, how cool and convienent is that? .

I say we give this company a try. No company started off the best and most popular. Some people complain that they haven't heard of this, haven't heard of that. Of course you haven't heard of FISION because it's a NEW SERVICE. It has to establish reputation before anybody will know what it is. DUH!!!

The day you receive that email with the big annoucement, I suggest you get ready for some high speeds!!! :-)

Plus, if something better comes along, I move, need to reduce expenses, etc., I can jump ship ANYTIME with no financial penalty. There are also no distance limitations, as is the case with DSL.

I don't really understand your reasoning. The analogy isn't flawed. Power companies may already have hookups to peoples' homes (while Fision doesn't), but that wasn't always so. Are you saying that because virtually no one now has fiber that it's unworkable, or somehow suspect? Fision doesn't have a many-years long track record of delivering these types of services to people, but, who in the US does? This is emerging technology, and if Fision can't do it, someone else will soon enough.

If your argument is that, as a new company, these guys are less likely to manage the feat than a long-established company like TW or SWB, that COULD be true, but isn't necessarily. Existing companies are generally slow to adapt to new technology, only grudgingly changing as the market forces them to. The well-known players have many millions invested in their existing technology, are set in their business practices, and in their ways of thinking. *Sometimes*, a new player has the advantage of STARTING with new technology, and bringing fresh ideas to the table. They can hire people who are well-versed in aspects of the business they want to establish, rather than butting heads with senior officials who are more comfortable and feel safer with the status quo.

As for HOW the fiber will be brought in, I can't describe the mechanics of how it's done in detail, but fiber will be run from the "trunk" to peoples' homes much in the same way telephone lines are. If SWB did it, why can't someone else? I can't talk dollars, but would think the time/trouble would be minimal when compared to phone lines or coax cable. While the head-end electronics may be more complex, the fiber itself is far simpler and more flexible (technologically speaking) than copper.

You're right in that this won't happen overnight. It's not like Fision will be able to offer service to the 1.6 mil quoted about from Day 1, but it shouldn't be a problem once deployment is completed.

All this said, it's possible all these grandiose plans could come crashing down due to a bureaucratic snafu, mismanagement, internal corruption, or just biting off a piece bigger than they can chew. It's equally possible that they actually know what they're talking about, and will become a huge success. Will it all go smoothly without any unexpected bumps or bad experiences? Probably not. We're talking virtually new technology here. You're right for the most part. With SBC, contracts are in place because SBC makes no money for the first three months on any DSL circuit. This figure is, of course, several years old - back when the basic package was in the $30-something range. I wouldn't be surprised if it was even longer now.

The modem costs money, setting up the line in the CO costs money, and various other things cost money.

This is why contracts are required. If someone is signed up for three or four months and decides to kill the service, SBC barely breaks even. If they only have the service for 2 months and cancel, SBC actually loses money. I don't think it's reasonable to expect the ISP to be cool with losing money.

Then again, it's all a matter of needs. If I were offered DSL for, say, $25/mo with a 12 month agreement, and cable at $45/mo with a month-to-month agreement, I would take the DSL.

Why?
- It's cheaper.
- The contract doesn't bother me. My credit is cool, and I'm not moving anywhere anytime soon.
- It's cheaper.
- Did I mention that I'd save a helluva lot of money?

All those savings just because I committed to paying them for 12 months. Not bad, if you ask me.

- I think SBC screwed up by doing ADSL2+/VDSL instead of FTTH.

- I'd much rather have a Verizon FiOS-like service than 6016/608 ADSL from SBC.
- My current job pays more than SBC would ever offer me... I don't think "SWB plants" get paid a decent amount. :)

Another way of looking at it might be to use an analogy: Phonoscope has already built the building and equipped it to be a restaurant. OEN has leased it, and determined the menu offerings. Considering that most of Houston is wired for RR, this will probably only go with apartment complexes and townhome communities. I've seen very few actual housing subdivisions that are serviced by a cable provider other than TimeWarner.

Still - not impressed. These guys probably won't even be a blip on SBC's and TW's radars...
