RCN come clean (sort of)

I got this today from the "Help" Desk :

"In response to your most recent email" [Having summarized the problems we are all having and why it is definitely an RCN problem I asked for the name and address of his supervisor's manager so that I could write a formal letter of complaint if the matter wasn't cleared up quickly], "I am sorry that you were disappointed with my recent response. After talking to the engineers regarding the issue, I was advised of the following:

"We regularly monitor customer issues and ensure that we provide high quality services. Bit-torrent-like services are high bandwidth users and can have impacts on the network and user experiences if the network is not tuned properly. We recently were made aware of some issues and have tuned our network to ensure a good user experience for these types of applications."

I thank you for your time and your patience. If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Email Support Staff at any time. We look forward to serving you.

Let's see. Hopefully the good news from Boston (LoctusBorg) will be repeated further down the east coast.

Incidentally the e-mails (to my RCN e-mail account) advising me of postings to this thread have become erratic of late...

Phunder,

Interesting...

But presumably if the "network tuning" has already been done then we should already be experiencing the results.

Re: Bit Torrent Uploads Being Disconnected

If anything, things are getting worse for me:

Look at the number of connection exceptions...

This is the repeating pattern:

Received "handshake" from peer.
Handshake is returned.
Connection exception.

quote:
[5:09:08.765] {net} Received [BT_HANDSHAKE of dataID: 6DC83FD3FCFF5BA1ABCF59F57698F0B61886444D peerID: -UT1400---f3---8F-;-] message
[5:09:08.765] {peer} In: has sent their handshake
[5:09:08.765] {peer} Peer connection closed: connection exception: end of stream on socket read

[5:10:02.734] {peer} In: has sent their handshake
[5:10:02.734] {peer} Peer connection closed: connection exception: end of stream on socket read
FFS RCN give it a break already... I'm getting really ticked off about this now.

That's pretty damning, phundercover.

jpjacob: "network tuning" is marketspeak for throttling/blocking

My read on it is that they tried to do something clever and got it wrong (to put it politely). I have responded innocently asking when the benefits of this tuning will be seen by the bit torrent users.

Since coming back from vacation, my BT hasn't experienced problems... that is, until today

Seems like they resumed back to blocking seeding.

I've contacted the 'Help' desk, pointed out that bit torrents involve uploading when not downloading and asking them again whether RCN are interfering with bit torrent activity. I've asked (again) for the name and address of a Senior Executive VP I can write and complain to - they didn't want to give it to me last time.

RCN's web site says:

Timothy Dunne, EVP & CTO

their corporate address is:
196 Van Buren St.
STE 300
Herndon, VA 20170

But, you might have to give your name, address, and account number to get a reply.....versus being (p)undercover

I'm still not experiencing these issues you guys are talking about. Last night I was downloading this...

»revision3.com/indigital/ces2006/

at max speeds (>1.0 mb/s download) in both directions. the only time i have issues with speed is when there are no peers or seeders. Then again, I don't abuse the hell out of it nor do I use top speeds at all times (I limit my speeds most of the time).

The latest build of Azureus (29) has an option (options > Connection > Advanced Network Settings) to Require Encrypted Transport. I haven't found any documentation of this feature, nor have I been successful using it.

Read all about it:
»azureus.aelitis.com/wiki/index.p···cryption

"Work In Progress!
This specification is still under development and should NOT be implemented until this notice is removed"

Looks interesting though, should be useful if they get it finalized and get multiple clients to support it

Thanks for the link sycocowz. I understand that uTorrent is developing something similar. J

@c3-0.bkl-ubr1.sbo-bk

using utorrent build 406, lazy.bitfield on, on the utorrent forums, its recommended to use ports in the 9k

try it

Actually, the uTorrent forum says to use ports in the 9000s with lazy bitfield turned off. Either way, makes no difference for me. Thanks though.

AndyD2K,
Its NOT about downloading. Its about seeding. A lot of people are finding that once their torrent is complete, and goes into "seed" mode, new peers can't connect (or rather appear to be forcibly disconnected by something happening inside RCN's network). I've seen this behaviour, but it seems to come and go - suggesting it only gets "turned on" for parts of the network that are struggling with upstream congestion. If that is what is happening, (i.e. only getting used selectively) then I would have to say, to some extent, I applaud RCN. After all - they aren't throttling the downloads at all, unlike Rogers/Shaw etc.

I'm in Boston and seem to be experiencing the same thing Nozzer has. Most of the time I can seed, but there are certain times, seemingly at random, where I cannot connect.

I would add that I try to use BT responsibly! I use uTorrent, and have made full use of its "scheduler" feature to set different bandwidth limits at different times of day, ensuring I'm not too greedy during the peak hours, and only letting it go full on in the early hours.
