 | University Blocks Access to certain video games My university blocks access to certain video games. It will not tell me why and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to which oens it blocks. World of warcraft and all of steam function fine, BF2 is blocked, Final Fantasy XI is blocked. I was wondering if it was legal for them to block access to a perfectly legal game? I asked to have the ports opened through email because that is the only way to get in contact with them and they simply said "we are not going to open the ports for that game". Anything I can do? I really would like to play BF2 |

If you want your own, unrestricted, internet connection, you'll need to see if it's possible for another ISP (local cable company, DSL, etc) to provide service to your dorm, or wherever you're living. |

Next does your campus have vpn access. I know that when we vpn to the network it take every restriction off. Reffer to: »VPN tutorial in this forum. |

Best thing for you to do would be to hunt down one of the employees for your campus Telecommunications/Networking department. A good place to start would be your campus IT Helpdesk, which most schools will have. I would not put in a trouble ticket or anything, just ask for the number for someone in Data Networking.
Another good way to try to get in touch with the right people is to locate the number for your University's Telephone Switchboard...call them up and ask to speak to someone in the Telecommunications and/or Networking Department.
In fact with my University, our switchboard is located right next to Telecommunications so we certainly would know where to transfer you.
Just keep going up the ladder, you should get an answer at some point. |

Re: University Blocks Access to certain video games I suggest talking with your Student Government, either for the campus or residence halls. We had some big problems, and got them mostly addressed thanks to the Residence Housing Association within a week. -- Visit the un-official OOL web site. »www.OptOnline.tk |

 | Re: University Blocks Access to certain video game well I talked with IT and they said the number of ports required for BF2 poses a security risk. I'm leaving for winter break shortly so I guess its silly to to try to pursue it now. But is that a valid excuse or could it be overcome? |

aviper9Premium join:2003-05-20 Salisbury, MD | reply to jsherlock Alot of ports are required, it is true...however IT might be giving you a run-around. Dont know about your school, but here if we perm block ports, it has to be a real good reason (like blocking 445, 135-139). Those are actually the only two we block.
The ports required for Battlefield 2 are:
TCP: 80,4711,29900-29901,1024-1124
UDP: 1024-1124,1500-4999,27900,28910,16567,55123-55125
so there are alot of ports, but nothing to bad really. See if you can talk to someone else. |
