OT: Going up in Smoke I heard about those Maxtors catching fire as well but with the many millions of drives out there this ultra-rare occurance can probably happen with any of them, irregardless of brand. The same goes for any electronic device and I have also read about PSU's and motherboards that "went up in smoke". It's no reason to summarily dismiss a particular brand because of one unlucky fellow.
