Re: ICQ File Transfer and BEFSR41 To setup the router to allow file transfers w/ ICQ is rather simple. There is no need to use the DMZ.
First, determine which version of ICQ you are using. Whether 99a/b or 2000a/b. Second, determine which firmware version you have in the Linksys router.
If you have a newer firmware such as 1.38.5 or above, preferably 1.39, you can use port triggering on the port forwarding setup page. Otherwise, you will have to use port forwarding.
The advantage of port triggering is, the incoming ports are only open when they are triggered by a specified outgoing port.. Instead of being forwarded all the time.
For ICQ 99a/b, the outgoing trigger port would be 4000 For ICQ 2000a/b, the outgoing trigger port would be 5190
Now, you must determine which ports you want to forward. Typically, you need at least 5 to 10 ports per user for ICQ direct connections and file transfers... If you want to send and receive files from multiple users at the same time, you will need a larger range of ports.
Pick a range of ports that are uncommon and rarely used. For example: 50000-50099 This should be enough ports to make ICQ happy.
Your port triggering rule should be as follows:
For 99a/b [ICQ] 4000-4000 50000-50099
For 2000a/b [ICQ] 5190-5190 50000-50099
Now you must configure ICQ to use those specific ports. In ICQ... ICQ button > Preferences > Connections
Server Tab: Using firewall, not using proxy
User Tab: Not using proxy Use following TCP ports for incoming events 50000-50099. [text was edited by author 2001-09-28 13:21:36] |
