I know this was an old message but I was looking at this topic for the first time.
800x600 is the most adequate resolution for a 15-inch screen. 1024x768 gets kind of smallish. That's what I use at home because I have a 15-inch monitor. At work I have a 17-inch, so the screen is set to 1152x864 which looks just fine.
