Sweet Witch posted : Actually you use 91% isopropyl alcohol (found at most drug stores for $2/qt) and a cotton swab to wipe the old compound off both the heat sink and core.

Fresh compound makes sure the connection between the core and heat sink is solid and works to the best of it's ability. If you simply reuse the old, not only are you losing the part that's sticking to the old heatsink, but you'll then have missing spots and air bubbles which can overheat the core very quickly and you don't want to be buying a new core for not spending $10 now on compound!!
--
Never argue with an idiot.
Sean8 posted : Everytime you remove a heatsink you need to apply new compound (scrape the old compound off first). It's to create a new seal between the heatsink and the CPU, cause the seal breaks when you take the heatsink off.
--
"Whomsoever you see in distress, recognize in them a fellow person."
- Motto of the LSS

Looking for a new fan for my cpu

Gamer2004 posted : My 4 years old computer is still running fine, but I have heard some very loud noise from the cpu fan for a couple months. I have tried to take the fan off and do some cleaning, but it didn't get better. I don't do any overclocking with my AMD Athlon 970 Mhz CPU, and I think the fan is simply too old. I searched for a CPU fan at newegg.com, but not sure which one is the right model. After all, the CPU I have is an old model.
This is the one I found, can anyone help and tell if it will work for an Athlon CPU?
»www.newegg.com/Product/P ··· 35114005

They don't sell cpu fans alone, and it seems that I need to replace the heatsink with the fan together. Is it tricky to install a heatsink? Any help will be appreciated.
