It's the DRM that makes or breaks it

Will it record to DVD?
Will it obey the copyright bit?
Will it record HDTV shows?

Tivo doesn't have the best record for privacy or consumer rights. Hopefully, Tivo will realize that signing a pact with the devil (directv/comcast/etc) is the same as signing a pact with microsoft, and in the end they will get steamrolled. Having said that, should Tivo make the Gen 3 'consumer friendly', they can expect to be sued out of existence ala ReplayTV. Not sure how they can win either way.

Sure the internet has lots of porn and piracy, but I'm sure there's a downside to it.

Oh there is a huge upside to this. If the Tivo3 can be modded like a xbox then it will be a hit. They can put protection in it and lock it down, but if some clever person hacks it and creates some sort of modchip, then it will take off. To me the xbox is so hot because of the ability to really make it do what YOU want it to do.Tivo3 + modchip(i.e. record HD from sat/cable, real time encoder = major sales and serious profit. I would definitely buy one then.

Maybe you and all the other techies but not the average joe like myself. I'm not at all interested in tinkering with my digital equipment for fear of screwing it up and my warranty in the process.

And im guessing that the vast majority of TiVo subscribers just want a box that works and is not too restrictive.

I think you would easily pay an extra $100 to someone to solder a few pins on a chip to get rid of popups and enable fast forward thru commericials. Then imaging being able to take an HD signal, cut out commericals, and then encode straight to HD divx, XVID, or h.264. Hey TIVO are you listening, screw MPAA,DRM, and RIAA. Give us the toy we want and you will reap the benefits. SIMA gave us nice $50 toys (unintentionally of course) that blocked out VCR/DVD macro signals. Those things flew off the shelves in BestBuy, we hardly ever had them in stock when I worked there.

Actually you'd be wrong. I'd not be interested in anything of that sort. I don't want anyone screwing up my gear. If I fear the RIAA's restrictions that much I just would not buy any devices that were severely locked down.

Replays after the 4XXX series sucked. They removed the sharing, they removed the auto commercial skip. I stopped with my 4000,never bothered to go to the 5000. With DVARchive, you can pull all the shows from your Replay, but since I record most stuff via HDTV now, my replay gets very little use.

Just to reply to those who AREN'T interested in their fair use rights. Let me ask you this, do you like to spend the 50-100.00 to get a TV show season on DVD at the end of the season? What about the 1200.00 you paid to receive those channels during the year? Where's your compensation for that? Or do you think that TV shows should 'expire' and if you want to record them for permenant archive purposes, you shouldn't be able to do that? If you could spend 250.00, and save ALL your shows, same quality, to DVD at a cost of 2-3.00 per season, would you consider that stealing? Do you consider commercial skipping 'stealing'? What about recording PPV?

Bottom line is I give them money, they give me entertainment. I choose the way I want to use the entertainment they sold me, not them. DRM is nothing except taking away my rights. If they try and take away those rights, then I go underground. Bottom line is I'll get what I want in the end.

(Note to MPAA. Teens are smarter, and even LESS moral than you are.. you're dead, and too greedy to realize it. Change your business model or die.)

*note: The DVD versions of show often suck, since they DON'T use the same music as the broadcast show. That's a major peeve of mine.

No they didn't. The 50xx series had internet sharing and auto CS. The 54xx series removed all that. But IIRC, 54xx owners can hack their boxes to 50xx series to add it all back.
