So what...

...TiVo execs are a bunch of spamming whores. Like Adaware...I'm NEVER going back no matter what they release. All of my series 2 units were spammed endlessly (until I cancelled anyway) and new DRM rules (wouldn't let me keep Family Guy until I delete) lame. I've had TiVos since the first Xmas they were released and back then the service was great. You bought the box, paid $10/mo for guide updates...no spam...perfection in technology.

Then they raise the monthly fee 30% and you would think with such a large increase they could go without banner ad spam, spam while FFWDing, the pulsating thumb ads and system message spam (yes I would get "official" system messages about new Sheryl Crow albums). That would all be well and good if guide updates were free, but for nearly $160 plus the cost of the hardware (plus I paid HMOx2 when they used to charge for it) you would think they could provide a spam free service. My HD DirecTiVo sees no such spam and if it ever does, it will be gone too.

Now I've seen some here claim they've never seen this spam...to them I say consider yourselves very lucky.

Lol. I feel bad that so many people have been traumatized by tivo. It is somewhat annoying that my current series two lacks dual tuners, but then I would record more crap. As far as spam...can someone define spam. As in the messages that show in in the 'tivo central' page?

just wondering

I actually got sales pitches in the System Messages area where you normally get line up changes and stuff. It would say You Have a New Message...I woudl go there and they're selling Sheryl Crow or a GMC truck.

Indeed, I think the monthly subscription is keeping a lot of people from buying one. Plus, why not pay less and get it from your cable or satellite company?
Plus, what do you really get for the subscription? If you buy a series 3 and have a Cablecard 2.0, you'll get the EPG from your provider, right? So, you'll basically just be paying them monthly for software updates? Sorry if I'm wrong, I've never used a tivo.

As I see it, the novelty of TiVo was in it's feature set. Now as time passes, competitors are catching up. When I first got Comcasts dual tuner HD-DVR it didn't have "season pass" like features but after a few software updates it does, along with other popular features like 30 second skip and little DRM headaches (I could record ANY HD programming via FW to HD-DVHS with no problem). There is simply less and less reason to pay extra for the TiVo badge on the front of the box.
