Re: [New Members] Introductions Somehow I have managed to not reply to this thread since joining
Anyways, hi y'all...my real name is Chris...I am 26 years old. I live in New Jersey now but was born in Colorado. I have lived up and down the east coast over the past 7 years due to moving duty stations a few times. As my avatar picture suggests, I used to be in the Navy and served aboard submarines. Now though I am a clinical engineer for Beckman Coulter. I use cwy1980 as a handle just about every website I am a part of...less confusing that way for me
I have been crunching off and on for TD for...well quite a while going back to late 2004/early 2005 when we were still crunching for UD...due to military commitments/injury sustained in the military there were times when my crunchers were offline because I was gone on an extended absence...
But now I am out of the Navy after six years with injuries somewhat healed and crunching more than ever!
I have many reasons for crunching for a cure to Cancer (and with the WCG project I can crunch alternately for another personal passion for cures for HIV as well! )...I have lost a few close friends and family to the ravages of cancer. It is such a devastating disease to not only the mind but the body...as well as mentally devastating to friends and family. This is something that at least in doing and being a part of I can have hope that with a collective effort like this we will find a cure. |

My sister died of cancer when I was six and I'm doing this in memory of her and in hopes of finding a cure for cancer so others don't have to go through what my family already has. |

TychicusChildren are our most precious resourcePremium join:2002-01-18 Helena, MT | reply to bbrcat Howdy all I am male 51 years old and living in my home state of Montana.
My legal name is Lawrence but I have never went by it I go by Lucky in real life. I have a story about the name.
All of my family including both sides called me Lucky. Growing up in Montana in the Gallatin valley we moved to the then tiny town of Bellgrade, and at that point in time there was no kindergarten you just started the first grade. On my first morning of first grade the lovely old lady by the name of Mrs. Agnes called roll call. But when she came to my name she used Lawrence. ( at that point in time I never knew I had any name but Lucky) so when she figured out that I was the missing link in her roll call she demanded that I answer to Lawrence. I remember thinking this one of those crazy people I had heard about and I refused to answer to "Lawrence" as my name was Lucky, so she grabbed me by the ear and I got to go to the principles office where they called my mom and I will never forget the sound of her laughing over the phone as she informed the principle I had never been called anything but Lucky and had no idea Lawrence was my legal name.
I have recently(as a single parent for a tad over 13 years) finished raising two boys ages 22 as of last week and 20 last Jan.
I too as so many folks here have lost friends and family to cancer over the years and am glad to be able to do anything to help in the fight.
About 8 years ago I used to do the Folding@home at a local tech school and always liked the idea of many small threads making a strong rope.
The most important thing I do is volunteer at local old folks homes and hospitals where I play music. My most accomplished instrument is harmonica and I am a proficient guitar player and I mess around with a mandolin and banjo.
Having grown up in Montana I know a lot of old country stuff but I also enjoy a little of every sort of music but Blues and Jazz are floating at the top along with Bluegrass, Folk, and country.
I am looking at going on the road with a friend of mine within the next year (God willing)and do a traveling fix it repair for old folks, disabled, and the poor along with a music ministry. |

| reply to bbrcat Well, I'm LadyL here @ DSL, LadyLonnie @ TSC (FINALLY!) but birth name is Ilona...prefer to be called Lonnie. Born in Germany, came over in '51 (yup, I'm that old ). grew up in San Francisco, been married 2x (divorced once, widowed 8/8/06). Have lived in California and Kodiak, Alaska - hubby was USCoastGuard - Flight Engineer on C-130's and Aviation Metalsmith (AMC/E7 Retired). He decided to retire from the military instead of going for Warrant Officer and a deskjob @the CG Academy, so we moved back to Lorain, Ohio (his hometown) in '77. He retired in '92 from BFGoodrich. In my younger days, I worked for the CoastGuard at 12th District Hdqtrs (SanFran), Navy in San Bruno (Calif), DHEW (that's Dept. of Health, Education and Welfare - don't know what it is called now)(SanFran). Went to Kodiak and worked for the CG again at the Commissary, then transferred to the FAA as a Supply Specialist. Came back to Lorain, stayed home for 9 years, then went to work for the Gold Circle Dept. store as a Price Change Associate until it closed down. Then worked for Toys'R'Us from '89-95 - did everything except have keys to the store and signin for the $$$ from Brinks! Quit there in '95 and stayed home...got bored to tears and went to work at Kohl's in Avon 11/23/04...still there. Have 3 children - Erika (40), Kathy (37), and William, Jr.(Bud)(35)...and 9 grandkids - 20g,16b,16b,16b (twin boys ), 14g,13g,12b,9b, and 8b! My sister (9yrs older than me) died of cancer in Germany - have no idea what form of cancer...she died in '2001. That's the only person that I know of that has had cancer. I decided to crunch because I have a new computer and it is on all the time anyway. -- Lonnie |

Forgot I already posted about myself, but what the hey, here's more (like you really want to be bored to death, huh?):
How DO!
I am signmeuptoo, aka bucky, aka my real name withheld (due to harassment concerns of some DSLR trolls who won't leave me alone).
I am a former Photonics/Semiconductors Industry Junior Engineer/Technologist and grad of the leading LEOT college in the USA. I am disabled due to a health issue but actively working on NOT continuing disabled. I have been getting rehabilitation and have been working towards starting an entire new career in truck driving hopefully, if my body proves it can take it. An attempt on my life years ago put my life in a tail spin.
I crunch both Team Discovery projects and participate with Team Helix too. I am regularly encouraging people in other forums to come join us over here; I don't know if any have joined because of this, but I try. I implore my fellow members to also do this: suggest to others to join when you can, there IS nothing wrong with some moderate "evangelism" for the cause!
I have a passion for physics, optics, science, fishing, music (I have an off center taste in music, loving Fusion and Progressive arts), a former semi-pro guitarist. Cooking is another hobby, and back in the old days I liked to rappel.
I have lived all over the USA and my wife is a Filipina, so all things Pinoy are of interest to me as well. I am a proud daddy (the single most important and treasured part of my life was raising two step daughters and now a son).
My heroes are Dr. W. Edwards Deming, R. Buckminster Fuller, Nikolai Tesla, Abraham Lincoln (who battled with mental illness while struggling to hold a wife and nation together), Larry Coryell (an innovator of Jazz Fusion) and countless other men and women who have proved to have greatness. I will never be such a man, but I like to dream anyways.
My thing of greatest value is LOVE. While it has many forms, LOVE is the glue that keeps the human race from destroying the planet, if we didn't love, we would all be dead by now.
I am VERY worried about global warming and have given up on my political party because of it.
BTW: I used to work at our labs and I can tell you from personal knowledge that our nation's most brilliant scientists are ***ALL*** GRAVELY concerned about the planet, for instance, the polar ice caps will be gone is just a few decades and billions will perish. Sorry to end on that note, but any of you driving planet killers should think about that. Cars are THE greatest polluter of the planet, by FAR.
I lost my mom from cancer and emphysema, and, worse, from progressive depression. I still ache inside over her loss at a way too young age, she inspired me in a number of ways as a boy and I am furious with the tobacco companies who killed her. Yes, she made the choices, but THEY got her hooked and kept her addicated, all the tobacco companies are is "legal" drug pushers, and just like the song says, "god dag the pusherman!"
Edit: I have to mention, like Aggie Dan and some other here, I am an Aggie, oh well, at least a semi Aggie (my techical college used to be an "extension" of A&M's long arm. The reason Aggie jokes are so popular is because Aggies can take a joke as good or better than anyone!
I applaud all my fellow cruchers and folders, may God and The Heavens bless all of you, and your loved ones! -- I don't claim to be a genius. Sure, I used to be one of those dorks, but I lost my IQ, so forgive me my occasional addled mistake! At least I admit to my errors, which are frequent, I am old... God save America! |
