Well, I'm LadyL here @ DSL, LadyLonnie @ TSC (FINALLY!) but birth name is Ilona...prefer to be called Lonnie. Born in Germany, came over in '51 (yup, I'm that old ). grew up in San Francisco, been married 2x (divorced once, widowed 8/8/06). Have lived in California and Kodiak, Alaska - hubby was USCoastGuard - Flight Engineer on C-130's and Aviation Metalsmith (AMC/E7 Retired). He decided to retire from the military instead of going for Warrant Officer and a deskjob @the CG Academy, so we moved back to Lorain, Ohio (his hometown) in '77. He retired in '92 from BFGoodrich. In my younger days, I worked for the CoastGuard at 12th District Hdqtrs (SanFran), Navy in San Bruno (Calif), DHEW (that's Dept. of Health, Education and Welfare - don't know what it is called now)(SanFran). Went to Kodiak and worked for the CG again at the Commissary, then transferred to the FAA as a Supply Specialist. Came back to Lorain, stayed home for 9 years, then went to work for the Gold Circle Dept. store as a Price Change Associate until it closed down. Then worked for Toys'R'Us from '89-95 - did everything except have keys to the store and signin for the $$$ from Brinks! Quit there in '95 and stayed home...got bored to tears and went to work at Kohl's in Avon 11/23/04...still there. Have 3 children - Erika (40), Kathy (37), and William, Jr.(Bud)(35)...and 9 grandkids - 20g,16b,16b,16b (twin boys ), 14g,13g,12b,9b, and 8b! My sister (9yrs older than me) died of cancer in Germany - have no idea what form of cancer...she died in '2001. That's the only person that I know of that has had cancer. I decided to crunch because I have a new computer and it is on all the time anyway. |

Howdy all I am male 51 years old and living in my home state of Montana.
My legal name is Lawrence but I have never went by it I go by Lucky in real life. I have a story about the name.
All of my family including both sides called me Lucky. Growing up in Montana in the Gallatin valley we moved to the then tiny town of Bellgrade, and at that point in time there was no kindergarten you just started the first grade. On my first morning of first grade the lovely old lady by the name of Mrs. Agnes called roll call. But when she came to my name she used Lawrence. ( at that point in time I never knew I had any name but Lucky) so when she figured out that I was the missing link in her roll call she demanded that I answer to Lawrence. I remember thinking this one of those crazy people I had heard about and I refused to answer to "Lawrence" as my name was Lucky, so she grabbed me by the ear and I got to go to the principles office where they called my mom and I will never forget the sound of her laughing over the phone as she informed the principle I had never been called anything but Lucky and had no idea Lawrence was my legal name.
I have recently(as a single parent for a tad over 13 years) finished raising two boys ages 22 as of last week and 20 last Jan.
I too as so many folks here have lost friends and family to cancer over the years and am glad to be able to do anything to help in the fight.
About 8 years ago I used to do the Folding@home at a local tech school and always liked the idea of many small threads making a strong rope.
The most important thing I do is volunteer at local old folks homes and hospitals where I play music. My most accomplished instrument is harmonica and I am a proficient guitar player and I mess around with a mandolin and banjo.
Having grown up in Montana I know a lot of old country stuff but I also enjoy a little of every sort of music but Blues and Jazz are floating at the top along with Bluegrass, Folk, and country.
I am looking at going on the road with a friend of mine within the next year (God willing)and do a traveling fix it repair for old folks, disabled, and the poor along with a music ministry. |

I'm Stephen, I'm 24 and am a student majoring in Computer Science.
My sister died of cancer when I was six and I'm doing this in memory of her and in hopes of finding a cure for cancer so others don't have to go through what my family already has. |

Somehow I have managed to not reply to this thread since joining Anyways, hi y'all...my real name is Chris...I am 26 years old. I live in New Jersey now but was born in Colorado. I have lived up and down the east coast over the past 7 years due to moving duty stations a few times. As my avatar picture suggests, I used to be in the Navy and served aboard submarines. Now though I am a clinical engineer for Beckman Coulter. I use cwy1980 as a handle just about every website I am a part of...less confusing that way for me I have been crunching off and on for TD for...well quite a while going back to late 2004/early 2005 when we were still crunching for UD...due to military commitments/injury sustained in the military there were times when my crunchers were offline because I was gone on an extended absence... But now I am out of the Navy after six years with injuries somewhat healed and crunching more than ever! I have many reasons for crunching for a cure to Cancer (and with the WCG project I can crunch alternately for another personal passion for cures for HIV as well! )...I have lost a few close friends and family to the ravages of cancer. It is such a devastating disease to not only the mind but the body...as well as mentally devastating to friends and family. This is something that at least in doing and being a part of I can have hope that with a collective effort like this we will find a cure. |

Also not new...also returning.
Cancer took another family member in April of this year and that harsh reminder sent me back to Team Discovery.
My paternal grandfather died of colon cancer, my maternal grandfather died from Leukemia, an uncle died from Pancreatic cancer in '01 and his wife followed April of '07 (same disease), an uncle has bladder cancer, another uncle has colon cancer....it just doesn't seem to end. Also, like most of you here, MgKnight is a treasured friend of mine and his battle has brought me both tears and pride in the strength of survivors.
I crunch for my family, my friends and the strangers who might be spared this disease one day because of what we all do.
TSC is running on my main work computer and installed on three others (still can't login to activate them though). In the end, I expect 5-6 to be alternating between TSC and Folding.
Glad to be back amongst the good folks here. Crunch on! |

Hi all, my name is Angel from NYC. I'm a public servant by profession, always interested in helping others.
I had a spare box sitting around, and another computer that runs 24/7 as a syslog server (not very cpu intensive) so I figured I'd help out and am currently using the spare box for WCG, and the Syslog system for Team Helix Folding.
Nice to see so many others trying to help others. |

Lets see here. My name is Joel and I'm 22. I'm a system admin for my friends company but the title "system admin" hardly encompasses everything I do. Basically if it plugs into the wall in some fashion or runs on batteries I handle it. But it doesn't end there, I do budgets and planning as well. I'm an entire IT department all rolled into one neat package LOL.
I've wanted to join for a while but for a while I couldn't leave my computers alone long enough for it to be worth it. I still do to some extent but I don't have as much free time as I used to (read the first paragraph for why). Various illnesses have happened to my family (breast cancer, MS and Emphysema mainly) so I figured this is just one more way I can help out. I'm bringing about 8 computers into the task. |

hi, i'm chris i'm 28 living in joplin,mo i'm a cust serivce rep for comcast for the next week till they comletly drop this location. will be workign with some prescription medicaid plan thingy after that. found this place when i was doin tech support for 1st.net(R.I.P.) out in ohio a few years ago. i love this place give me somthing stimulating to read allday and is almost the only contact with tech svvy people i have these days. i joined team discovery because i was already looking into seting up a bewolf cluster (just for fun really havn't figured out what app i would run on it)and the fact that they jerks that have hijacked a good portion of the worlds computers and have insane computer powers through there botnets, i figured i use my compting power for good not evil. figured if i'm gonna run 4 pc's 24/7 might as well do something rightous with em. well sorry if this reads like a broken record, years of just im'ing and never acually writing normal things has ruined my grammar skills. time for me to get back to work -peace- |

Well, I've already introduced myself once in this thread, so I won't bore with the same details now that I'm able to crunch again. However, I would like to add that one of my best friends has been diagnosed with a recurrence of cancer, she had been cancer free for 12 years! I'm glad to be able to be crunching again, at least I feel like I'm doing something for her and everyone else who suffers from this terrible disease. Lizzie, you GO girl!! |
