DogFace05 : Digidat, you can't load SPA1001 fw on a PAP2T. First of all, the firmware load format is different (same as for the SPA2002 and other newer Linksys ATAs), so simply changing the headers won't do any good. Even if you managed to load that firmware, it would likely malfunction, as the PAP2T uses bank switching to access the two halves of its 2MB flash memory (the processor can only directly address 1MB of flash at a time), and the port signal used to do that bank switching serves a different function in the SPA1001. Then there's a timing issue. The processor chipset in the PAP2T uses a different (faster) time base, so you'd end up with an accelerated SPA1001 where everything would be timed wrong.

The PAP2T is basically to the SPA2002 what the PAP2 is to the SPA2000, with one major difference. The PAP2 family daisy chain the line interface chipsets (SLICs) on one and the same serial interface, whereas the SPA family put them on separate independent interfaces. The SPA2000 firmware loaded on a PAP2 would just ignore the failure to initialize the SLIC on the second interface, and thus there'd be just one line available, while the LEDs would be screwed up (the IO ports used by the SPA2000 for the 2nd SLIC's serial interface are used by the PAP2 to access its LEDs), but the unit would still work fine with the one port. No such luck with trying to load SPA2002 fimware on a PAP2T, as it will hang and reboot indefinitely when the second SLIC fails to initialize.

DogFace05 : It should be clarified that none of these firmwares restore "Vonage Defaults" per se. There is nothing Vonage specific in any of the Sipura or Linksys PAP2 (v1) firmwares. What the SPA1001 v 3.1.12 firmwares and above do is recognize and use any Linksys-firmware-specific customized factory defaults that are already stored on the adapter, regardless of whether they are Vonage's or any other provider's. Sipura firmware store the customized factory defaults in a memory block that when decrypted contains a Sipura specific header, whereas Linksys' header is Linksys specific. When older Sipura firmware read such custom default configuration entries with a non-Sipura header, they considers the entry invalid and igonore it, thus resulting in unlocked adapters. As rizzo2dial has now discovered, the newer Sipura firmwares now also recognize the Linksys header and therefore carry over the locked settings from the Linksys world. But there is no restoration of anything, it just recognizes settings that are already there. Anyone who has a true -NA or an NAized adapter has absolutely nothing to fear from the newer firmwares.

Clarification: An NAized PAP2 is one that has had the customized default settings (eg, Vonage's) wiped out and thus made functionally identical to a PAP2-NA. The run of the mill PAP2s unlocked with instructions found on this and other forums are NOT NAized, and are very much vulnerable to relocking upon factory reset with the newer SPA firmwares, as pointed out by Rizzo2dial.

I was surprised that the URL above has remained active this long, and now I think I know why.

Today, while prepping a PAP2 for a friend, I accidentally factory reset *my* PAP2 which had recently been upgraded to SPA1001 3.1.7 firmware. Upon navigating back to my PAP2's web interface, I was able to login w/o a password in USER MODE, but when I switched to ADMIN MODE I was suddenly prompted for a pw. Since I had just factory reset the adapter, I should NOT have been prompted for a pw. This was the first sign that something was wrong. Next I noticed that the DNS servers configured in the adapter were the ones belonging to Vonage. At that point I quickly figured out what had happened. Linksys had updated SPA1001 firmware (at some revision since 3.1.8) to restore Vonage Factory Default settings when factory resetting a PAP2 adapter loaded w/ SPA1001 firmware.

Since I had previously saved the adapter's FACTORY DEFAULT GPP_K value, I was quickly able to re-unlock it by feeding it a simple XML file encrypted w/ my FACTORY DEFAULT GPP_K. The XML file contained known user & admin pws, removed IVR protection, opened full web access, etc. It's an encrypted version of the plain-text XML file one feeds to a PAP2 during the 3.1.9 unlock process.

After re-unlocking my adapter, I decided to start downgrading my PAP2 (in SPA1001 mode) to older firmware versions, factory reset the adapter, and determine at what point Linksys added in the code to reload Vonage Factory Default settings. Based on my tests, all firmware versions starting at 3.1.12 and above (listed at the URL in the post quoted above) contain the necessary logic to reload Vonage Factory Defaults upon factory resetting the adapter.

The next lowest firmware version available at the URL above is 3.1.10 (SEh0407s). That version does NOT re-load Vonage Factory Default settings upon performing a factory reset, and that's where my tests ended.

If you load SPA1001 3.1.12 (or higher) firmware onto a Vonage PAP2, it it is no longer factory reset SAFE!!!

Rizzo

P.S.
DogFace05 : You can make the failsafe code run by shorting address lines 18 and 19--don't recall which pin numbers they correspond to--but it's kind of tricky, since they happen to be on opposite sides of the chip. However, it's kind of moot, due to a *slight* blunder by Linksys. As part of the initialization of the failsafe code it goes and reads the manuf/device id of the flash and validates it against a list of supported devices. If the device isn't in this list, the code halts and is rebooted by the watchdog. Well, would you believe the MX29LV081 flash chip in most (if not all) PAP2s, so happens, isn't in the list. Ooops! In all fairness, I don't know if the failsafe in the SPA3K fw also lacks this support, so there may perhaps still be a chance that you could get it to run. Also, the failsafe in PAP2 fw 3.1.10 was changed, so it is possible that it may have been fixed now.

If you had paid more than US$50, then you had been had mainly because a PAP2-NA can be had for as little as US$50 and/or a PAP2T-NA (new version PAP2-NA) can be had for as little as US$60.
--
Mazi (UK Non-Geo Phone: +44-703-194-2574)

mazilo : I have flashed one of my PAP2s with the SPA1001 v3.1.8 (SEc) firmware and have uncovered some interesting discoveries.

Here is what I have done so far with my PAP2:

1. Modified SPATools to work with SPA1001 firmwares.
2. Took a virgin Linksys/Vonage locked PAP2 and flashed it with this firmware to unlock it.
3. The newly unlocked PAP2 had retained some of its factory default values even though it's plugged to Internet live. However, upon a factory reset, the factory default values for DNS got replaced with the DNS values from my router. Also, the factory default values for all GPP_ are completely gone.
4. I haven't got a chance to play around too much to configure this PAP2; however, I will leave it connected to the Internet to let it get provisioned by Vonage (which I doubt) and will report back later on.
5. One interesting observation regarding this SPA1001 v3.1.8 firmware is its version and size. Its size is very close to the size of a PAP2 v3.1.8 firmware.

BTW, someone has already had his PAP2 flashed/locked with PAP2 v3.1.9LSc firmware. I am sure Vonage is starting to pushed out with this new v3.1.9LSc firmware.

[Equipment] Configure Line1 on your PAP2 with two VoSPs

mazilo : Apparently, someone has used the SPATools to mod the SPA1001 firmware and flashed it to a PAP2 unit to make it like an SPA1001. According to the post (written in Spanish on 1/6/6), he was able to access and dial out using Line2 by preceding the numbers with dialing a # from a phone attached to Line1. The only problems are the LEDs and Line2 port no longer functioning. Hell, if you want to use your PAP2 with two SIP lines on a single line telephone, perhaps this this the way to go. Notice from his post, the PAp2 was running with SPA1001 firmware v3.1.8 (SEc). So, to sum up benefits to run your PAP2 with SPA1001 firmwares is as follows:

1. Perhaps, PAP2 unit is ALWAYS unlocked.
2. You will only need a 1-line telephone to connect to your PAP2 unit and be able to use both lines.
3. Perhaps, the SPA1001 firmware v3.1.8 still supports for a USER MODE firmware upgrade... ;) After this hack, I wondered if Linksys/Sipura/Vonage will waste their effort to release SPA1001 new firmwares with the USER MODE firmware upgrades disabled.

Perhaps, the following will list the disadvantages of this mod:

1. Line2 port becomes deactivated.
2. LEDs no longer functions, except the ETHERHET LED.
3. Void your PAP2 warranty.
4. May render your PAP2 to useless with a prolong usage with the SPA1001 firmware.

Well, are there any guinea pigs here who dare to test their PAP2s to screw Vonage? At any rate, please don't forget to PIN your unlocked PAP2 on the Frappr Map for PAP2 to show Vonage how much $$$ it has lost to SPATools.
