Extortion

Me: Hi, GM, I'd like to buy a hybrid.
GM: Sure. We can sell you a car that has a hybrid feature. But you'll need to pay a premium to have that feature activated from our dealership you acquire the car from.
Me: WTF? I can get a hybrid that works from Toyota or Honda.
GM: Yes you can. But it won't be supported at our dealerships.

ok. Bad analogy. But still, I pay $$$ for a tool that is crippled from the manufacturer for the reseller/VAR??? I wonder if suing Motorola AND Verizon is needed here.

Yes, I hacked my moto (has bluetooth icon on back) to enable BT features (like syncing) to my Mac. Used a PC to do it. Skruw U VZW....

Even better, at least one of the big auto manufacturers in the U.S. tried to sue (=extort) Toyota, or at least threaten them via government channels so they would be forced to share their hybrid technology. Yet another reason I will likely never buy a GM/Ford/Daimler-Chrysler product.

One automaker does something lame and the rest of Americas workforce has to take the brunt of your economic boycott..

Way to take a stand... Just keep sending those dollars(yen)to Tokyo.

Well... until an american automaker comes up with something truly innovative... and a reliable product... I will keep buying foreign cars.

I recently saw a Ford commercial where they claimed the 3-vavle per cylinder engine in the new F-150 was "innovative" BECAUSE it had 3-valves per cylinder. This took me by surprise... cause I know of plenty of cars that have been using, 3, 4 or even 5 valves per cylinder FOR MANY MANY years. Ford takes designs from old cars (Thunderbird, Mustang) refreshes it slightly...... and calls it innovation. No offense Ford... but there isn't innovative about what you are doing.

Chevy finally has a half-decent platform in the Cobalt.... too bad Nissan, Honda, and Toyota have had great platforms in the same category for YEARS.

It may controversial... for it's a FACT that American cars are not highly respected... both in... and out of the U.S.

Infiniti QX56 Rated Worst Car of 2005

New York, New York (AHN) - Using data released by Consumer Reports, Forbes Magazine has rated the Nissan Infiniti QX sport utility vehicle as the worst car of 2005.

The SUV received the worst ratings possible for the reliability of its brakes, power equipment, electrical system, body hardware and integrity, according to Forbes.com.
The report also stated the the Infinity QX is 300% less reliable than the average car. Retailing for about $50,000, the QX was the first Infiniti built in America and was an entirely new car when it went on sale in early 2004.

My 2001 Ford explorer has 110,000 miles on it and it has been in the shop once for shocks and a fuel filter.

Saying one car or another is better is so subjective. The circumstances involved are so variable its a laughable comparison.

I'll take the safe route and secure American Jobs... You can just go about sending our jobs overseas for your snake oil car.

Hi Jon,

While I respect your opinion, there's some degree of naivete on your part.

In a free market if you don't compete on the same playing field your products should fail. The problem is, our government bails out numerous industries like the big auto manufacturers, airlines, and it also heavily subsidizes the oil companies. I will leave the other industries out of this discussion since it's a whole other kettle of fish to fry. Essentially, if the auto manufacturers were left to innovate and compete like the rest of the world, they would be in a stronger position. Don't expect the auto industry to hold the status quo forever. It's an natural economic occurrence for industries to follow the path of cheaper labor and raw materials. I suggest you do a little research before towing the party line that people should 'buy american so the dollars stay here'. Think again. Who do you think works at the Honda, Nissan & Toyota plants in this country(?)

Jon, this is a poor example.

You are referring to a very complex machine which is not sold in high volume like the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry or Ford F150. Of course there are going to be issues with such a machine, or the statistics would show.

If you want a good yardstick of measure, compare the Accord or Camry to their domestic cousins. It's all about putting the best quality product to market at a good price, not about maintaining status quo employment because the UAW feels they are owed such outragous wages for producing inferior products.

Jon,

You need a basic economics refresher.

Buying american products in no way guarantees the jobs will stay. You are missing the larger picture which I alluded to in my previous posts.

Yes, it is. But you missed tapeloop's point.

It may not be as well made perhaps because it was finished/manufactured here and not elsewhere.
