I'm the guy who made the recordings

Several of you don't have any idea what a data center is. Nectartech is a hosting company that does web hosting, dedicated servers, and coo customers. I'm one of thise customers.

First - the recordings:

»marc.perkel.com

You'll find the links there.

Now - as to the single point of failure stuff. Generally people assume that the registrar will not just turn your domain off. An assumption that I'm rethinging after this event. For those who are critical of not thinking of this earlier I would point out that the same thing can happen to 99.9% of all domains, including the big ones. Example include:

broadbandreports.com
yahoo.com
microsoft.com
ebay.com
ibm.com
paypal.com
aol.com

So - if the registrar of the above domains nuked the DNS for the domain of the name server then they would be off the internel. Not only that but in the case of yahoo and aol, all their customer's domains would go down as well.

I don't see how anyone can avoid this "single point of failure" at the registrar. That is where you register your name servers.

Godaddy over-rode his nameservers with: NS1.SUSPENDED-FOR.SPAM-AND-ABUSE.COM & NS2.SUSPENDED-FOR.SPAM-AND-ABUSE.COM

Even if you set your nameservers to two different providers the registrar (in this case Godaddy) can still over-ride both. There is no getting around it.

Yep - that's right. But - lets say that other domains are referencimg nectartech's nameservers. If the DNS for the domain is:

ns.nectartech.com
ns.nectartech.net

Then even if nectartech.com goes down then nectartech.net will still work to provide DNS to other domains that use their name servers. I'm thinking about doing something like this. The idea being that the nectartech.net server is registered with another registrar, in a different country.

Are you a Nectartech customer? If so, why did you represent yourself as Nectartech employee/domain name registar on the call?

mperkel has the right idea; this is what I proposed in my messages up above.

Die Daddy MAY have the technical ability to change the nameserver record of a domain they registrar; but they MIGHT NOT have the ability to screw the nameserver that is on a domain they DONT registrar. I HOPE THEY DON'T.

But in any case, Die Daddy needs to Die.

He is a personal friend of the owner of the company and does some admin work for the owner of that company. He met the guy through being one of his customers.

It's a good idea, just like not single-homing with L3 is a good idea after the events a few months back, not that single-homing is ever a good idea for hosting places, anyway. Good luck with your recovery work.
