 | Internet Controlled? Bad idea. Ok, forget the obvious "oven catches a virus" or "Oven BSoD" jokes. If you are connecting anything to the Internet, there's a chance a hacker will play around with it.
Suppose you just set your dinner to be perfectly cooked when you get home. Now a hacker gets access, sees that you are warming up your dinner, and sets the temperature fifty degrees warmer so your dinner is burnt when you get home. The next day, he hacks back in and sets it fifty degrees too low so your dinner isn't cooked at all. Or maybe he turns the oven off. Or maybe he's really malicious and turns the temperature all the way to the maximum (which might result in a house fire or at best some *really* burnt food).
I might be able to see a combo device (*not* connected to the Internet) that kept your food cold (and thus safe from bacteria growth) until it heated the food up at a pre-programmed time. (One of the things I like about slow cookers is that you can put the dish on in the morning and come back at night to a fully cooked meal.) However, putting your oven on the Internet is just asking for trouble. -- -Jason Levine My Gallery | Jason's Toolbox | PCQandA.com | URateit.com |
