Re: Are they throttling port 1720 and 1755 now?

well that user TKI is probally on rogers to. they don't throttle bit torrent traffic in their own network as far as a i know. when i used to be throttled the only people i could trasnfer with upload/download with, were rogers customers.

I know we're all despretly trying to find some way around this throttling so we can d/l p2p at anything above 10kb/s but I mean really we are all customers most of us are paying for 6mb/s broadband. Yeah I know those speeds are "max throughput" and I know you are very unlikely to get them but still what residential user is ever going to hit anything above 1mb/s for a sustained period of time unless it's on a P2P. It's like buying a farrari and being told you can only drive it at 20km/h. This is highway robery. And if you guys consider what Rogers charges for their internet services, TV, cellular compared to what you can get for the same money in the US then you really feel used. Someone should take these guys to court. I'm just saying people shouldn't be focusing on how I can invest 30 hours of my time into getting round a cap that eventually they will catch onto anyway and start focusing how we can get a permanent solution to this problem and if that means a compromise in slower speeds or slightly more cash then I'm in but this unpublicised "secret throttling" stuff is BS.

Roger's isn't throttling the dls only the uls, but with no uls
you get a bad dls. I've been able to max out my dls on extreme speed on a heavily seeded torrent on any port, but haven't been able to ul anything. 1720 works for me but I gotta unplug the modem every now and again.

A standard Rogers reply to complaints about throttling:

We understand your concerns regarding issues you are experiencing with your peer-to-peer (P2P) applications. To ensure a consistently high level of service for all Rogers customers, it is necessary to put limits on the amount of network bandwidth available for certain types of applications. This process is called traffic regulation (rate-limiting, traffic shaping, throttling).

As peer-to-peer (P2P) applications have grown in popularity, their share of overall network traffic has increased dramatically. In particular, the application Bittorrent uses all of the space available for uploads.
To ensure that a relatively small number of applications do not slow service for everyone, Rogers limits the space available for P2P uploads. This ensures all customers have a high level of service for time-sensitive tasks like sending email, requesting web pages or voice messaging.

Rogers does not block any type of Internet traffic or application. Nor do we monitor the content of customer communications or activities on the Internet. Our traffic regulation is based on the type of application, not the way it is used.

I am using the beta utorrent and it works great. just go into options and under encryption put it as forced. It should work .

See, theres one thing that really confuses me about that email. He states they only limit p2p uploading yet i normally have 2KB/sec download with 35KB upload. How is that possible based on the email above.

Also, why is it, during certain periods of the day i get 80KB downloads while most of the day i get 1-2KB downloads. Do they only throttle in intervals?

using the new azureus, download speeds are alright but upload speed is usually 0.. anyone got any ideas? having my upload speeds low = not so good download speed.

I don't get it, if the problem is bandwidth, why don't they put a cap, like 20KBs up, 100KBs down on torrent downloads insted of completely blocking it.

Are they so ignorant that they can't undrestand by forceing too much , people either leave their service, or use walkarounds. why don't they think of a solution that can have both sides satisfied?

i personaly wouldn't mind a reasenable limmitation useing torrents, but no, they had to block the whole damn thing off so i can't use torrents any more. what kind of attitude is this? we are costomers, and suddenly we aren't wanted cause we use the service to its full potential?! and there is no need for them to bother and think of something that can satisfy both sides?

well I have been using new azureus for last few hours. Downloaded one file with everything going really smooth and green, closed it and then tried downloading another file and guess what? Damn thing stays firewalled again. This is got a be rogers thing kicking in cause even though I forwared all the ports and in azureus I tried NAT/firewall test and it said ..OK! My uploads are going properly around 30KB/s and my download is sometimes hitting 30KB/s but nothing close to what I was getting just few hours back 150KB/s on average. All I know is I am back to the old crap, yellow smiley face and azureus saying on bottom "DHT firewall" "TCP firewalled".

Thank You!

Been reading this thread for a while and must thank everyone for all the knowledge I picked up when I first typed "Rogers bitcomet problems" into Google about a month ago. That's when I first started noticing a dramatic decrease in torrent download speeds, down to as low as 2-3 kb/s. I have experimented with the suggestions in this thread and am currently getting the best speeds (52 kb/s Down - 44 kb/s Up) using Bitcomet with "Protocol Header Encrypt" set to Always and listening on port 1720.

Got of the phone earlier with Robbers ooops I meant Rogers, anyway the sweet lady on the phone confirmed they are regulating the bandwidth of p2p and Bittorrent applications due to a detrimental effect on its other services. What’s that about?

Anyone know of an uncapped DSL/Cable provider in Toronto?

Forever Downloading!!

Uncapped cable - no - it's only Rogers (well there is 3web, but they only resell rogers)

DSL ... see the Canadian Broadband forum.

They are throttling because they don't want problems with Rogers Home Phone.

They need to upgrade their network if it is such a problem! I know it is the spec. of DOCSIS that are the limiting factors, but they should upgrade to DOCSIS 2, or jump to 3 for futureproofing. They are still running 1.1, how lame is that?

Re: Are they throttling port 1720 and 1755 now?

I know most of u guys here know this, but ever since the throtling bittorent speeds on rogers are so unpredictable. But this new azureus encryption is still helping a lot, cause even though it says I am firewalled I am getting up to 70KB/s at times. Not the greatest but better than 1-10KB/s.

encryption is working!

we rogers users will only be able to download and seed to people who use azureus 2.4.0.0 or utorrent 1.4.1, its very crucial now that we rogers users have a lot of azureus or utorrent peers to dl and seed to =\ i've noticed more azureus 2.4.0.0 users now on the peerlist for some of my torrents, speeds are improving for me now. getting 200kbps on one torrent, lots of speed coming from azureus 2.4.0.0 users.. if only everyone used azureus better yet, other clients should get this shit implemented ASAP and work together with utorrent/azureus.

by the end of the week speeds on torrents should be normalish i guess. especially when a stable release of utorrent that has encryption comes out, not many people are using the beta for that.

3WEB provides service without cap, even it is on Rogers's network.
But it is stuck on Rogers's throttling as well
