tlhIngan : If they do that, they they're gonna have a LOT more problems.

Large encrypted traffic may be bittorrent, but it may hot, and in fact, may be simple VPN file transfers (e.g., PPTP/IPSec to work, ssh file transfers (again, to work or web site, etc). Oh, perhaps a nice file transfer going on over HTTPS or other SSL-encrypted traffic.

Gets difficult fast - encrypted traffic doesn't necessarily mean bittorrent, and a lot of bittorrent traffic can also be done over other encrypted links. Hope the Ellacoyas that Shaw bought have room for processor upgrades - otherwise to scan and characterize all encrypted traffic would mean the entire Shaw network slows to a crawl. (Might be good - if joe average user finds his online banking takes forever because the Ellacoyas are overloaded scanning all encrypted traffic...).

hotweiss : If you download the latest beta builds of Azureus and uTorrent you will increase your speeds. Just make sure to enable encryption in the options menu. Both of these clients use the same protocol for encryption, so you'll have a huge user base.

In uTorrent, just go into other options and select Enable. That is it. Leave allow legacy incoming connection checked.

The Azureus beta with encryption is a little hard to find and install right now, I'd recommend uTorrent.
