Smooth transition hereWell, after a disastrous brush with Comcast HSI cable I'm back with Cyberonic. Technically I never left, but I had my service powered down for a couple of weeks while I tried out Comcast's 8 meg service. Unfortunately, they have huge problems here in the bay area and evening pings were over 200ms best case for any counter-strike game server I cared to look at.
So, I broke out the new router that arrived a couple days ago. I was pleasantly surprised to find that my covad pings are actually a bit faster than the old worldcom speeds (which weren't bad). I went ahead and requested the 6 meg upgrade, we'll see how that goes.
My only complaint with the process is that since I've got five static IP's I had to hunt around a bit to find my DNS addresses, it wasn't documented on the form that came with the router. Fortunately I remembered good old 4.2.2.2 and used that for a bit until I found the proper DNS.
So, no issues here, no complaints. |

ok, I lied. The transition was smooth, but the line has been up and down constantly, especially tonight. |

So from what I've gathered from reviewing all the upgrade threads is that only those that received the briteport modem are having issues with the quality of their link. True? Anyone who received the Netopia having issues?
I'm reportedly getting switched over next week and they sent my modem out on Friday, but not sure yet what I'm getting. Also, anybody know if the router password is included when it arrives or do you need to call them to get it? |

I was home over lunch and the modem was delivered and I got the Briteport 8120. So let me rephrase my earlier question - Anybody with the Briteport *not* having issues?
I'm not getting migrated till next week so I'm going to try to swap the Briteport with my speedstream 5861 and see if I can get it to work on the current UUNET line and check the line stats before the migration.
I'm at work right now so won't be able to check till tonight, but any pointers on things to watch out for here? I followed the instructions someone posted here to switch the 8120 to bridged mode, so I'm hoping it's as simple as swapping it with my 5861 (I have a linksys wrt54gs behind my modem to handle my home network).
FYI - also answered by own question about the router password on the 8120. Looks like the routers ship with the username/password both set to the default of "admin". |

What I can't understand is why the people being transitioned now are having so much more trouble than those of us who transitioned earlier. I had Cyberonic 1.5/768 MCI service with the Speedstream 5861 for about a year and a half. I then switched to 6.0/768 Covad service with the Broadxent Briteport 8120, which I've now had for about a year and a half. The transition was smooth, with minimal down time, and the Covad service has been pretty much trouble free ever since. Is there something different about the Covad service compared to a few months ago? Is it possible that these new lines were provisioned in such a hurry that they screwed up the configuration at their end? |

"Is there something different about the Covad service compared to a few months ago?"
Is it possible Covad may have taken over existing Verizon/MCI equipment, especially in Verizon territories? I am basing this guess only on the fact that I saw wording earlier about whole central offices being converted at once. I do not know if it is correct or not - does anyone?
There was an agreement in late December between MCI, Verizon, and Covad settling a prior lawsuit and defining who would do what in terms of providing DSL services. From that point on, Covad was to be a preferred provider for Verizon. I imagine this is all a consequence of that agreement. |

I had a pretty smooth transition. Once I figured out how the IP and PPPoE was all set up, it wasn't a big deal.. the script didn't work on my old router, so I popped in the briteport and used the wizard for setup.. everything works fine now. Except for the problems with routing to some sites, mentioned in another thread. I guess having a former bogon IP address isn't that great... hopefully that will get fixed. |

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Is there something different about the Covad service compared to a few months ago? Is it possible that these new lines were provisioned in such a hurry that they screwed up the configuration at their end? +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Mass migrations like the Covad cut-over are scripted, so everyone gets the same circuit settings (whether or not it's correct). The only way to resolve specific issues is to open a ticket and hope that they will work with you in good faith to resolve the issue. In my case they didn't, so fired them. I've been on SBC for the past 24 hours (with a Cisco 2600) and have not seen any circuit errors, interface resets, or other circuit issues. All the problems & circuit errors that I had were a Covad issue & potentially related to the junk Briteport router they sent me. |

Works great here with BritePort, so far. Speedtests actually show that my upload has increased slightly from the Efficient and MCI, which matters to me most, since I have servers, use X-Forwarding when remote, stream music (my owned music), etc. Remaining tasks:
* PPPoA wouldn't go for me, so Ryan at Cyberonic is looking into that (Ryan was very kind and helpful, btw). * Requested bump to 6Mbs/768Kbs from 1.5/768 - Ryan said that usually takes about 5 days.
Traceroute shows 3 less hops than previous to slashdot.org, and I'm going through Level 3. Not bad.
I'm in SF, 94110, very close to the CO. |

Yep, I did that. In fact, I had to do that for PPPoE, too. The problem was that my userid/password was not being accepted for PPPoA, but was for PPPoE. Could be user error, but Cyberonic is looking into it. |

Could be that the DSLAMs in your CO don't support PPPoA. I wouldn't sweat it too much - the speed different is quite minor. But if they get it working that's good too. |

If you can negotiate & authenticate on PPPoE, but not for PPPoA, then PPPoA is probably NOT supported. |

Cyberonic has a new presentation on the » www.cyberonic.com/vip web page that walks through the configuration for the BrightPort. It worked fine for me on the first attempt. So, subject to a few days for line testing, I can say my transition was smooth. I have only an hour's experience so far. |

Yah. I used the same slide show at www.cyberonic.com/vip to set up my efficient router and worked right away. smooth transition here. I give them a lot of credit switching customers in a short time. The switch over was painless. |

OK, now PPPoA is fixed. Decent speeds, very low latency. |
