ID 10 T's Guide to High Speed Access

I'm looking for a simple chart that indicates the following for performance and costs. My fear is that I may buy into one technology, only to find another one is offered at approx. the same cost but is a much faster technology.

Ex. --SPEED--
Cable *****
DSL ****
Wireless **
Satellite ****
ISDN ******
So On ******

Ex. --COST--
Cable *****
DSL *
Wireless *****
Satellite ****
ISDN ******
So On ******

I need to wrap my mind around the anticipated performance and costs of the different technologies (for rural access). I understand there are factors such as distance, but I am only looking for a high level idea of what to expect with what type of technology and at what cost.

There is NO general speed, or cost for most of the services you listed.

For example, Cable, DSL (which in itself have multiple types, ADSL, SDSL, IDSL, VDSL, etc), Wireless, and Sat all come in a wide range of speeds, which will then determine the monthly cost.

ISDN can be 2 speeds, 64k, and 128k, again the speed, area, and company will all determine cost.

Then I would assume the "so on" would be T1, DS3, OC-x, etc.

Again, vary greatly by location, speed requested, and cost.

Understood. Let me ask this a slightly different way.

Satellite appears to be the most expensive internet technology that a consumer (not business) can purchase.

I've seen some of the competition offer equipment for the $500.00 range and then service is $59.00/month. With that said, what would I get in wireless technology for the same expenditure? Would it be faster/slower. AS expensive, less expensive, more expensive.

Is there any other technology that a rural consumer can use? SWB-DSL is not available and neither is Road Runner. I am too far out in the sticks.

This still can not be honestly answered (with the info you provided). All of the above would vary depending on the specific location, the WISP, etc.

For example a WISP in TX may charge $50 for a 1.5/256 connection, and a WISP in NE may charge $100 for a 1.5/256 connection (Those prices, and speeds where just made up)

If you are just looking for general/generic info, google searches should help. if you are looking for specific info in your area. I would suggest requesting some quotes over here. »ISP b2b etc

Of course, but at what cost. If you have the money, an ISP, or carrier can supply you with anything you want.

Do you want a DS3 (45m) delivered to your private island in the middle of the ocean? It can be done, but it will cost you

He-he...Sadly, I am a typical consumer and want my own mega line for 10.95 a month..

I understand, I was just hoping that there was a rookie 101 chart somewhere that easily stated if all things were equal (distance, cost, environmental factors) then here is what a consumer could expect
1. "____" would the fastest at "~_____" cost
2. "____" would the a little slower at "~_____" cost
3. "____" would the even slower at "~_____" cost
... all the way down to good ol' dial up.

That way I could go to my phone book and start shopping for something.

I am relocating to Bertram Texas in a few months and have only found Wirless, Dial Up and Satellite. I have no idea which is faster, no idea why Satellite reqires a professional service install only (as I did my own TV) and why the equipment is so blasted expensive.

I was hoping to find some basic information here first.

You might have better luck posting in one of the "satellite" forums, like the Direcway one - »HughesNet Satellite

The reason for the professional install is because the antenna has to be precisely aligned in order to get the outbound signal to the satellite. (This is for "2-way".)

If you don't upload much stuff, then "1-way" might work. This uses a phone line for the uplink. I think they are cheaper.

Also depends on what you are planning on doing with your line.

Satellite is worthless for online gaming. But good for downloading, not so good on uploading. (I think price is $50+/month)

Dial-up, well is the lowest you can go. Not so good at anything, but will work in a pinch . ($9.95-$21.95/month)

ISDN is a constant 128k/128k connection. Very stable. Good pings in online games. Snappy web-surfing. So-so for downloads, and so-so for uploads. ($60/month for the ISDN line and $9.95-%54.95/month for the ISP= $70-$115/month)

Wireless, don't know a whole lot about. I've heard of line of sight and wireless using the cell phone towers. "Supposed" to be dsl/cable quality. Speed/pings/etc.. But I honestly don't know. ($25-$75/month ?? this is a best guess on when I briefly looked into it)

Clearwire just opened up shop here in the Temple/Killeen area. They use the cell towers. I don't know if Sprint/Cingular offer it here also. And I don't know of any WISP operators around either.

Hope that helps some.

Foz

Western Broadband - »www.westernbroadband.com/ - say they are in Liberty Hill. Depending on where you are in Bertram, you might be able to get them.
