Crappy Article

Oooo look it's probably a trial of DOCSIS 3, with a nice press release attached.

Quoting from the story:

quote:
Because the residences in an apartment complex are close together, the company can offer faster speeds than those it delivers to housing developments. Broadband speeds tend to drop the further the computer user is from network equipment.
Erm, no darling that'd be DSL that is affected by distance, not cable.

To be honest this is a complete non-event. It'd be far more appropriate to call this a technology trial and e-peen extending press release. Cheap asses charging 200 bucks a month to triallists too!

I'm very content with 30 down / 2 up for $55 a month from Cablevision

I will be switching to Fios once available for 30 down / 5 up for $59 a month here on Long Island(Competition is great)

Cable service does degrade with distance. The reason why you dont hear that often is because the areas they serve are served by fiber deep into the network. They pick and choose whom they determine cost effective. In many instances you have areas where they do not serve because they determine them to be cost prohibitive. And thus they put more fiber in the areas they choose which leaves short distance between you and the fiber node.

I have never read more nonsense.

In all of the cable areas I know about EVERYONE hooked to the CMTS gets the same options on speed, unlike DSL where you have to be within a certain distance to get certain options. If the cable company thought it cost effective to run cable the 2/3 mile to my cave I would get the same package as Bill who is 100 yards away from the Headend.

But thnk you for replying.

Cable does degrade with distance. However, cable companies have designed their networks such that fiber is run to local nodes and then coaxial cable from the node to the home. This is why the speeds on cable are generally consistent among all users. Telcos could do this with Remote Terminals but have opted not to in most cases because of costs.

If you have a cave 2-3 miles from CMTS, your cable company had better have a node nearby or else good luck getting any kind of signal at all.

But thank you for replying.

That'll be why the cableco networks are actually active networks - the coaxial legs have amplifiers in them.

The only distance limitation is how many amps you can cascade as each one reduces the signal quality slightly.

If you're 2km from a node either you're in a very sparsely populated area and you're at the end of a lot of line extenders or your cableco needs shooting. Fibre should be much deeper than that these days, 250 - 500 homes passed per node is the current aim here.

BTW distance from the CMTS is totally irrelevant to most, you can be about 100km away from your CMTS before the timing delays caused by distance (light and electricity only travel so fast) will cause the DOCSIS protocol to break down.

Either way if distance is an issue your cableco has very badly planned their network, which is really fairly criminal considering the control they have over power levels etc. For all practical purposes distance isn't an issue and the active cable networks shouldn't be confused with the passive DSL networks.

The issue with cable is ingress noise into networks or faults causing problems with power levels rather than distance. Do not underestimate the amount of attenuation that's voluntarily *introduced* into cable networks to keep power levels under control.
