Whats there to do in Austin?

Hello Gang,

So what can a fellow yankee do down in Austin, TX? We are in the middle of a snow storm right now so a break from the cold weather should be nice humidity is probably going to mess me up though.:p

What can I do round there? What is there to see? We should be there for three to four days for a video game conference, but other than that we are in the free and clear.

I saw online that there is shopping, lakes and bats, (definatly interested in the bats) anything else that we dont already have here in DC?

When are you going to be here? I don't think the bats arrive for about another month or two. Then again I was walking on the trail that goes under the Congress Avenue bridge a week or so ago and could hear all the chirping and the smell the guano. But I don't think they are too impressive this early in the year.

The state museum is nice and has an IMax theatre - »www.thestoryoftexas.com/

Where are you staying and where is the conference. Be advised that Austin doesn't have a "usable public transportation system". There are buses, and sometimes they go where you want, but not usually.

The bats that live in the bridge in Round Rock are still here. They've stayed all year for several years now. I guess it doesn't get cold enough to force then south like it used to.

"The Kinkster" for Governor! If you live in Texas, you know who he is. If you don't, then you can't vote for him anyway.

If you come today or tomorrow, you may encounter snow in Austin, too! They're predicting possible snow or sleet/snow mix this weekend! I'm an hour north of Austin. It was 80 degrees two days ago and I had to crank on my air conditioner! Typical Texas winter!

Lots of great restaurants in Austin. Sixth street is a hub of night life activity. You might want to check out the Texas Tourism Bureau on-line for lots of sights possibilities.

Thanks for the advice guys, I am going to be in Austin like next thursday to that following sunday.

Here is the location:
The Commons Center at Pickle Research Campus (PRC), 10100 Burnet Rd, Austin, TX 78758

I have no idea what exactly that is, but my hotel is like 15 mins from it. I am willing to travel like an hour or two to see any sights. I dont get out of the DC area too often.:p

The Pickle Center is smack in the middle of nothing.

Which hotel are you staying at?

If you don't mind driving and hour or two, then you might as well hop down to San Antonio & check out the Alamo (it's so dinky in real life) and maybe a few of the missions in the area.

The bats do stay year around, but the show is still considerably more impressive in the summer time.

The bald eagles are still wintering on Lake Buchanan this time of year. We took a Vanishing Texas River Cruise a few years ago. It's quite spectacular to watch them fly and the upper area of the lake where they nest is beautiful itself. It looks like the eagle cruise is only on Saturdays this month and next. Make sure to get reservations if you want to do this as the boat fills up quite often.

Undoubtedly, you'll have easy access to our major thoroughfare: 'MoPac' expressway.
Hmmm, this time of year, if you are interested in a little night life, go downtown. The 6th street and warehouse district will have, at least, live music... if you're into that. Late night, I'd suggest 'Antone's' - its downtown - usually bluesy.
San Antonio is about a 3 hour round trip (to us, that's reasonable travel). On the northern outskirts, a short side trip would get you some caverns. Forget the name right now. I've heard that this one is magnificent. It'll be advertised on the way down I 35 (Natural Bridge Caverns?)

- Take a walk around 'Town Lake' hike 'n bike trail. adjacent to that is Zilker Park, with the fabled Barton Springs Pool.
Of course you'll have to arrange some transportation - basically everything will be 'inbound' from your spot at the Pickle center. 6 miles or so will get you downtown.

Thanks guys! It sucks, I just checked the weather, and its going to be raining the whole time. Gah this stuff sucks, you spend more time looking for something to do than actually enjoying yourself. I guess this is where I can roam the streets of Austin until I get lost and just see what the heck happens. I guess finding a good place to eat wouldnt hurt, and the live music sounds really really good. I will be looking forward to that.:D

When you get into town, pick up a copy of 'The Austin Chronicle' - its filled with music venues, restaurants,... just a good entertainment guide.
It won't be found in the national chain stores -ala 7 Eleven, but navigate to stores, shops, that look 'local'.

Cool. Thanks for that tip. Im in Austin now. Man 35 and 71 are mothers to navigate. I saw a TX Steak Place I wanted to go to while I was on RT 35, and I have to drive like 5 miles down then make a U turn and come up those side roads lol. Went down to the University of Texas and saw some "sites" (read:college girls) and I walked the park they have down the street from the school. Other than that, we just roamed Austin and saw as much as we could see in one day.

Tomorrow we are going to the Arberetum and down to San Antonio after that (no plans on that, just going to go). Heheh Not to play into race but its true what you see on TV and stuff, this place is mini Mexico, couldnt expect anything else though.:p It is so nice to have the sun out though, we have had 30-50 degree weather for about two consecutive months now.:)
