What's the big deal?

I've tried several models of iPod and it's nothing special.

I think if you do a good job on promoting something it does not have to be a quality product to be success.

IMO the iPod is a very high-quality product, from the packaging all the way to the features. Have you tried a 5G? Apple's engineers have done a fantastic job with it, but I will agree with you that they aren't worth $300; I just don't use it enough to warrant the cost. Luckily mine was the product of about 1/3 gift certificate money.

I'm within a month of my 5G purchase, and I'm strongly considering taking it back so that when these release in April, I can get one of them.

I like my PSP better. Sure it may be bigger, but it still fits in my pocket. I can do videos, MP3s, and games. Only drawback is storage space.

The original was amazing for it's time. I recently replaced my 1g iPod with a video iPod. I agree that it isn't that much better than the competition nowadays, but it is still a great product.

I bought a PSP planning on using it for it's movies and music capabilities, along with some games. However, it really isn't worth it. It's too big, memory sticks are expensive, and they only go up to 2gb in size. The PSP really isn't any good for anything but games.

I use the nano and really like it, my time on the treadmill goes much faster now so I look at it as an investment in health

I give Apple credit though, Ipod is such a big name that no one wants to be seen with an off brand, it makes you look cheap by settling for something less then an Ipod.

That's a very valid point!

I think the iPod is more of a fad, and that's why everyone must have one. I'm not trying to say it's a bad product, it's a very good MP3 player, but the lack of certain features and a higher price prove that it's a fad rather then the superior product.

I own an iAudio X5L and I can say for the same price of the iPod I got a lot better features and audio quality. The only thing the iPod has an upper had on it is the video playback features, but that was only a luxury rather then a necessity to me

HA! Cheap? Settling? You are one of the easily gullible hoard. I own (by choice) a Rio Karma. It has higher fidelity sound, a 5-band, fully adjustable parametric equalizer, (for those of you that don't understand what a parametric equalizer is, it not only allows you to adjust the bias of the 5 bands, but it also allows you to choose the 5 bands you want to apply equalization to) it cross fades between tracks (that feature alone makes it better than any IPud - gapless playback!), it came with an excellent dock which has stereo RCAs out for easy, standard hookup to any stereo and it's software is easy to use and allows easy loading and offloading of tracks on any PC without concern for any type of DRM. Oh, did I mention that it plays MP3, OGG, APE, FLAC, WAV and WMA? 10+ hour lithium-ion battery (as my mileage indicates). Fits perfectly in your hand and allows for volume and track selection much easier and with less concentration than an IPud. I recently upgraded mine to 30gb and I wouldn't trade it for an IPud if you paid me.

Settling?

I love my video Ipod also. It does DVDs too (using Videora Converter + DVDdecrypter). And with 30 GB, storage isn't a problem. Of course, battery life means you won't get through Braveheart on a single charge.
It also sucks that they keep improving on them every year. But, eBay + Xmas giftcards usually means upgrading costs little or nothing.

That Rio is ugly as sin. I have a friend with one and he wants my 4g "iPud".

First of all, the Karma is not ugly... but clearly your friend values aesthetics over all else. Wow, looks are really important in a music player. So does that mean that if apple comes out with the prettiest looking piece of tin sounded worthless plastic ever, that I should buy it? who cares about the way it looks? it's a f%*$ing music player, it outperforms the iPud, it sounds better and it's less expensive. Funny thing is that the (adult) people who work at my office who have iPuds like my Rio better because I have no issues transferring tunes to/from it without having to worry about syncing with iPudTunes. They also like the sound better, and the menu system and the crossfade between tracks. With my ugly Karma, I can go from track to track in my car without so much as a glance or second thought. Do that with an iPud... oh, wait, you can't... wow, but it looks great.
