TK421 : An excellent review of Windows Defender here: »www.winsupersite.com/reviews/win···eta2.asp

Paul is obviously pro Microsoft but I do agree with nearly everything in this article. One new feature I find very interesting in Defender is the Software Explorer - in particular how it clearly shows what uses the often mysterious Generic Host Process.

From the Tools option, you can access a variety of settings and tools (Figure). For example, you can configure when Windows Defender scans your system automatically (every day at 2:00 perhaps), and what it should do by default when it encounters different types of items (high alert items, medium alert items, and low alert items). The available tools have dropped significantly from the Giant Company Software releases, but that's in keeping with Microsoft's philosophy that this product should do one thing as well as possible, and not provide a kitchen sink's worth of functionality like its predecessor. You can view and restore quarantined items, view or change programs you've allowed to run, and access what's called the Software Explorer.

That last option is the most interesting. Here, you can view or modify system settings that are often very difficult to get at in a stock Windows system (Figure). For example, you can change the view to Currently Running Programs and get a nice look at what's going on in your PC, far nicer than the standard Task Manager view (Figure). Here's what I mean: In Task Manager, you'll often see numerous processes listed as svchost.exe, which is a Windows shell around executable DLLs, but never an explanation about what processes are hiding inside those shells. In Windows Defender's Software Explorer, those processes are identified as Microsoft Generic Host Process for Win32 Services, and you can see which processes are actually running inside them (under the Services heading). Suddenly those things don't seem so scary anymore.
I also like how you can easily change the default action for controversial "low risk" items. This is a good upgrade from MS-AntiSpyware. :)

I uninstalled MSAS and then loaded WD. It installed ok and updated fine. I have manually updated WD once since then and that went ok too. I have conducted both quick and full scans that completed fine and had no issues. I never seem to have adware/spyware but have tested WD by adding a file to my Startup folder and it caught it right away. So, so far so good.

Nevertheless, I have 2 minor criticisms.

First, MSAS does not uninstall very well. If any of you had it and uninstalled it or had WD install over the top of it, go to the C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware folder and you will find it's still there and has several leftovers still hanging around. From my casual observation, WD does not need or use these files. But the MSAS uninstall still leaves them behind. I plan to keep an eye out and see if these files are used for anything but I would guess they are just the leftovers of a poor uninstall routine (that can likely be trashed.)

My other nit I want to pick is the WD user interface. Specifically, no always on tray icon. I know MS is aware that many users want it and I hope they will respond to our request. I also wish the main program interface was a bit more detailed (maybe a bit closer to MSAS.) But I know this is not likely to happen.

Anyway, that's it to this point. I also have WD running on 2 other PCs and those installations are fine too. I realize it's still beta but it seems pretty good so far...
