barbi : Even though the first post on this topic made it sound like it's a known issue and their working on it, I don't believe that DirecWay realizes all the people their affecting. You think they would because they know how many people are on those satellites, but I think they look more at how many people complain enough for it to get to second tier support and 2nd tier to connect their problem with the AMC9 problem. This assumption is based on conversations I've had with DirecWay. The last one being that they're going to send out a technician to resolve my issue.

I'd really like to get a group of users together who are on AMC9 and experiencing the same problems. I think that if we work as a group it might make the priority higher on DirecWay's end. I'll be happy to make the phone calls, but I need people's names and specific issues, any case numbers, stuff like that. I already know of a couple people. If anyone else wants to join our band of brothers please email me.

fsebentley : I have been experiencing this problem as well, in the course of trying to figure out what the cause is I have done a large amount of force ranging and speed testing in an attempt at getting as much info as possable.
What I have seen has been that the 2/3 rate code gives more consistant upload speeds, mine range from 120-200 except during the evening slowdown. At rate code 4/5 I start out with 200, and after a period of time it drops off to between 20 and 50. This has been very consistant. The one thing I noticed changing from the initial info on the system summary immediately after ranging to 4/5 there would be an inroute group and inrout that changed when the speeds drop off. Whether this is a symtom or not i cant say as I really do not know what the inroute refers to.
Bottom line is that I have had the best results when ranged to use rate code 2/3, it seems that they are doing something on the 4/5 and I dont think they have it working correctly yet.
--
DirecWay | DW7000 Pro | AMC9 | 83W | 1370MHz | Hor | AMD Athlon XP 2500+ | 1000 RAM | XP Pro/SP2 | LAN: DI604 3 x XP Pro/SP2, 4 x Win 2000 | 1 x xStore DiskZerver

Not a huge difference. Occasionally I'll get faster. Over the past few days, doing a reboot of the modem (physically unplugging it, not the soft reboot via the modem control page) would occasionally get me back to full speed (200 up). But as of yesterday, that didn't seem to help. I'm languishing around 70 up, slower at times.

Again - be sure to call and complain.
barbi : I'm missing something. I started getting a slowdown last weekend sometime. I checked my stats and noticed I went from 256k 2/3 to 256k 4/5. Before that time, it would never try 256k 4/5 and for a while 256k 2/3 worked great. Now when I force range it tries 2/3 and 4/5. Both pass and it picks 4/5 as being superior, I guess.
Sounds like I should stick with 2/3. But how do I get it to not try 4/5?

RoadLizzard : Thanks Scapla. The guy did say that we could try to range back to 4/5 (as there was some advantage to that code) at any time. He said if I did to just keep an eye on the errors and if they start climbing again to range back to 2/3. Don't know about you but I'm tempted to stick with what is working for now. I'd sure hate to get back to the 15s.

Like I say, the guy may have been blowing smoke because there is a short window between when you talked to them and this guy. From what I recall your guy said they weren't aware of any probs on AMC9. What was kind of funny is he almost went out of his way not to say evening slowdown. He said "we've gotten a lot of calls between a certain period of time, say 7 p.m. eastern to 11 p.m. eastern", where people on AMC9 1370 have complained of slower speeds. I said "yea, evening slowdown." He said they were working it and he would add my comments to the file. I told him I average a 66% drop in speed from 6 p.m. - 10 p.m. (CST), and that it was predicable enough in that window to set a watch by. Hopefully if enough of us continue to let them know... Have a great evening.
--
DW7000/Pro/DYN/AMC9 1370

[DW7000] AMC9 Slow Uploads/Evening Slow Call w/ 2nd level T-Spt

RoadLizzard : Had an interesting call with 2nd Level T-Support (Engineering)this evening. I can honestly say the guy I spoke to was very articulate, well spoken, and extremely courteous. None of these things could I say about 1st level T-Support. My call originated from extreme and sudden slowdown in upload speeds. I couldn't wait the 3-5 business days for 2nd lvl to call and found info here on Force Ranging that fixed my problem. Engineer explained that there was some sort of problem on their end that caused the 256 4/5 rate code to not work properly. He said that whenever error rates go through the roof (mine were 20%+) that there is a NOC issue which will usually pass. He didn't say that he could identify a specific event at the NOC that generated this problem. Ranging to 2/3 most likely allowed the system to bypass whatever the issue was. Not sure I understood it all but I did get that sudden trans error increase = try ranging to different rate code and call T-Spt. We did have a brief aside on how frustrating that is when the knee-jerk response from the Florida 1st Level crew is, there IS no problem...

We then spoke about AMC9 evening speed redux. He admitted that they were getting a lot of calls about drastic speed drops during evening hours from AMC9 1370 folks. He said the calls had began picking up in mid-Jan and steadily increasing. He said he couldn't promise a get well date, but assured me that they knew this was an issue and it was on their punch list to work off. I genuinely enjoyed talking with this guy. He may have handed me a load of cr@p, but I felt better about the whole DWay picture afterward. Main thing is I got the impression he listened to what I was saying and didn't respond off a script. He also didn't rigor when I talked about BBR, which 1st level certainly did. Anyway, that's my story...

Cheers!
--
DW7000/Pro/DYN/AMC9 1370
