Here's another way to look at the issue. If ICANN had opened their doors a bit more to the rest of the World, then perhaps China wouldn't resort to this strategy and perhaps "we" would be less concerned about censorship.
Censorship itself is a totally different issue too. If you think CNN, Fox News, NBC, the White House, aren't censoring news, then you're living in a protective bubble. I can never understand why Americans should be so concerned about other nations censoring their people when we have our own problems here with our govt. |

The news sources you stated practice "selective reporting", and as gatewatchers, they deem what is "newsworthy" and what is not. They don't deny the existance of events, but merely don't report them. Chinese censhorship involves the editing out of history, silencing witnesses, and terminating leaks.
Basically, I've seen stories time and time again not make it to major news outlets. However, I haven't yet had the crap beaten outta me by O'Riley for looking up stuff on alternate internet sources. |

China used this ICANN mess as an excuse. If the US capitulated they would probably still seperate their DNS servers from the net because in the end China wants total control over their internet, and what better way to control what people see on the internet then to control the DNS servers they can access. -- Frankly, I no longer fear Hell anymore, because I know Satan will just put me in my old office and proceed to unleash an unending barrage of stupidity towards me. |

 | reply to Okman If the China wants to censor their people and their people is happy with it,
The Chinese don't hold Democratic elections, they can't choose to be "happy with it" or not.
This is clearly politically motivated. Its disgusting and an obvious attempt by the Chinese government to gain control over the latest communicative medium for the purpose of reeducation (a.k.a. laborforce brainwashing).
Censorship itself is a totally different issue too. If you think CNN, Fox News, NBC, the White House, aren't censoring news, then you're living in a protective bubble.
They are not censoring the mediums of transport, and thus, they can't censor a damned thing. If someone in Sri Lanka wants to post something about a violent outbreak caused by western interests, he can do so and it is there for access. Now, if someone in China wants to get word out about some particular form of institutional oppression ... oops! Too bad! Daddy controls all of the tools of resistance.
I can never understand why Americans should be so concerned about other nations censoring their people when we have our own problems here with our govt.
I don't know. World War II maybe? |

| reply to Okman They may be censoring news, but you can get it elsewhere. When was the last time you tried to access a site and got blocked by our government....well? Give me one solid example..I bet you can't.
Point is if you don't like what CNN, Fox tell you, you can go to BBC, Al Jazzera(sp?) or Leftist America Haters News Site or wherever you go to get your info if you wish. In China you don't have that option and to even compare the US and China is like comparing a Daewoo to a BMW... |

 | reply to Okman Wow Okman. Starting three totally different threads with a pro-China slant. Makes me wonder if you are seeding propaganda or if this is just a plain carpet bombing style of trolling. |
