[Connectivity] My account was suspended for exceeding the inFriday, Comcast cut off my 8 meg HSI account without explanation. A call to 1-800-COMCAST revealed that it my service was suspended for internet abuse. I was referred to the abuse phone # for details.
I did not receive a letter or any warning. I was just cut off.
A call to the abuse phone # was a waste of time. It is a voice mail box where you leave your # and they try to call you back within 24 hours (excluding weekends). I left a message and asked them to call on my cell phone #, since the account is registered at my home phone # and I am at work during the day.
Monday I called and left another message on their voice mail asking them to please call me on my cell phone. They never called me back. When I got home there was a message that they were returning my call from Friday on my home answering machine.
This morning, Tuesday, I called them again and left another message explaining that I needed for them to call my cell phone. About 3 hours later they finally called me (on my cell).
The rep explained that my service was suspended on Friday because I had used too much bandwidth in the previous month. I asked him how much was too much and he said that I had used over 600 gigs of bandwidth in the past 30 days.
He also said that they would reinstate my account, but that if I did not reduce my usage substantially, that they would suspend my account for 12 months. I explained that there are 7 internet users in my house and that on a per person basis, that is not an unreasonable amount of usage. He said that it was not up to him and that it was company policy.
I asked him if my usage was interfering with any of the other users on my node. He replied that I wasn't, but Comcast felt I was using more bandwidth than they felt was reasonable.
When I asked what was an acceptable # of gigs per month, he said that he was not at liberty to disclose that to me.
I did not argue with him or goad him in any way because I am at their mercy. I have 2 choices for bandwidth where I live 1) Comcast or 2) Dial-up. So they have me by the balls.
I am posting this to make you aware of how Comcast views accounts that use a lot of bandwidth and to let you know that their promise of unlimited bandwidth is a lie. I am not posting this to get a in debate over what is a reasonable amount of usage or to have you judge the nature of my bandwidth usage.
What will I do about it? I have no choice but to just accept it. I, and everyone in my house will probably reduce our bandwidth usage. We don't want to do things like open a new account every 6 months like one of the previous messages or shift some of our internet usage to the neighbors unsecured wireless network. |

You have to see Comcast's point. An 8Mb connection equates to 3.6GB per hour. Therefore, at 672GB in 30 days you were running the connection at over 25% of its absolute maximum capacity 24/7. This must be way beyond the 'normal usage' figures that Comcast use when planning their capacity (and pricing). |

Welcome to the high bandwidth usage club. Here's a older post about the same thing » [News] Comcast imposing invisible caps againI'm starting to think 600gigs is the magic number here. Not sure though. Comcast also does not make any promises about unlimited bandwidth. So there is no lie there. So in response to your high usage levels and having spoke with abuse about this you two are wanting to try to play number games with comcast on promo's and even steal your neighbors bandwidth due to their ignorance on securing their wireless access and thus potentially getting their service canned to? |

I've said before that I think the industry has to move to a per MB business model. It just does not make any sense that casual users of Comcast HSI pay the same amount as heavy user. I'm a heavy user, so I would certainly be negatively affected, but when I see Comcast and others talking about implementing a "surcharge" to certain companies (i.e. Google) so that their traffic is "prioritized" then I start to get nervous because you open up a whole can of worms regarding funny business between Comcast and some website (Comcast has no fear of blacking out cable channels if they cannot get a good deal from the content provider). |

This is why people are misinformed. It only takes one person to talk like he knows something.
Not in any of the articles I read anywhere on the whole Net Nuetrality issue was comcast mentioned. It was the Phone Co's not Comcast. Please if you post make sure you have correct info. |

With bandwidth not being free, of course they watch how much you're sucking through the pipe once it gets to a certain size. Its a normal business stance. And when did you hear about Comcast wanting to charge companies like Google for prioritized access? That was a telco brain child last I read. |

Okay, the Bells. Doesn't change anything I said about how some ISPs want to surcharge the likes of Google to prioritize their traffic.. You're dreaming if you don't think Comcast isn't going to try something like this. |

7 users in the household isn't an excuse. If your place's bandwidth needs are THAT huge, it's time to man up and pay for a more-expensive type of connection. Either that or break it up into 2 or 3 seperate Comcast connections at the very least or something. |

Well I have 3 active users *including my self* And we hit about 340 to 470 gigs a month. Now most of that is from my business downloading the same stupid windows updates, when I should just get off my lazy ass and setup one of my windows 2k3 boxes to download everything once and then machines could pull updates from there but I like using bandwith up does not take long to download everyont (on verizon dsl) But when I dont have half a dozen machiens in here every day it averages about 120 and that with quite a bit of downloading music and streaming videos and playing xbox live. You should probably only be pulling like 280 per month with 7 active users unless you go on a linux downloading binge daily. |

My ISP (Speakeasy) doesn't care if I max up and down 24/7. But then I pay $110 for 6.0/768, do they don't have anything to complain about |

Well I would have to agree with one of the previous posters. If you have to use that much bandwidth, than break it up into 2 or 3 seperate connections. Even with 7 users on that connection, 600Gs of bandwidth usage is A LOT. I mean the users have to be doing some bandwidth intensive activities....constantly. If you are doing that, than you need to either cut the usage down or break it up into 2 or 3 seperate connections. Good luck to you. |

Hire an ambulance chaser..I have Comcast too, and nowhere in my TOS are there limitations spelled out in the contract. Since this is a contract, Comcast is therefore in breach of it! My point is, it's irrelevant what he is downloading, if it's not spelled oyut in the contract then it is within boundries. Furthermore, why do I keep hearing this 2-tier theory with casual users paying less? They don't earn the money they make now!

Why bother pirating DVD over the net?
Netflix for $19/month - you can rip all you want.
I think Walmart or those movie rental store has similar deal
and if you're real cheap, stop by your local library and borrow those DVDs |

The guy is paying for service, regardless of his usage. The max usage amount isn't defined in their TOS, who cares if he downloads 600 terabytes a month. Hes paying for his service, the same as everyone else on Comcrap. And no, I have RCN as my ISP and having problems with them and their new throttling strategies. Welcome to 2006, so long DSL vs Cable wars, hello to Limits & Throttling craptactics... |
