I saw something yesterday about an update to IE6 but I can't find it now ...
... a little more info would be a good thing, unless you're just crying wolf ...

I just saw that thread too, after this one. So they don't want to have to certify their copies I'm guessing. -- ~~Then the rainstorm came over me and I felt my spirit break; I had lost all of my belief you see, and realized my mistake...~~ |

 | reply to antiserious I think what bond787 is referring to, is the new Geniune Advantage update you'll get from WU/MU. I've got the new one when I went there yesterday. Once that was validated there were three optional XP updates 912945, 904942 & 912475. One of them 912945 changes the way IE reacts to activex »support.microsoft.com/kb/912945/en-us
Microsoft is releasing a software update to Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 for Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 and for Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1. This update changes the way in which Internet Explorer handles some Web pages that use ActiveX controls. Examples of programs that use ActiveX controls include the following: Adobe Reader Apple QuickTime Player Macromedia Flash Microsoft Windows Media Player Real Networks RealPlayer Sun Java Virtual Machine |

 | Should I download/install these 3 new updates 912945, 904942 & 912475? |

... bluepoint, I suspect you're right ... from that link:
After you install this update, you cannot interact with ActiveX controls from certain Web pages until these controls are enabled. To enable an ActiveX control, manually click the control.
... I don't think most people read the bulletins until there's a problem, and maybe not even then ... one of the disadvantages of automatic updates is all the 'fun' troubleshooting the little surprises that pop up from time to time ... I wouldn't be surprised if we see some more threads in the next few days ...

1 edit | reply to xstation20 Those are optional updates, it's up to you. I did download them so far I have not encountered the activex mine;) mentioned in the kb. MS has not put an article for 904942 yet but if I remember correctly, it has to do with http& IE7. The third one is for australia's daylight time. »support.microsoft.com/default.as···s;912475 |

 | I asked b/c I work for a major content Web site and our developers believe our content won't display correctly on computers that have this update installed, as the site content has not yet been reconfigured to adapt to these changes.
as this is not an update that gets pushed by AU, I don't expect this to be a problem initially. but if more Web sites don't adapt to the changes called for by this patch, it could cause problems for people got the patch b/c PC makers included it in their disc images that ship with new PCs.
that's my take on it, anyway. |

You will have to purposely download these updates by getting it manually or updating from MU/WU choosing the "custom" option. My beta mode kicked in, so I tried the activex update to see what's its all about, so far non of my sites I frequented is affected but it could be I have activex suppressed anyway from my router.:D |

If you can post your website I can test it if you wish. |

"Users will be able to interact with such controls after activating their user interfaces."
Actually I tried it myself before posting: The ActiveX Control/Content will render correctly but you'll get an ugly frame and a tooltip "Click here to activate this control" when hoovering over the controls area. You'll need to click into the controls area once before you're able to interact with the control (i.e. press buttons or something like this in a Java Applet). |

Meaning NOT all ActiveX controls, there are ways to code ActiveX to avoid this limitation. So I was just saying it does not apply to ALL web pages using ActiveX.
So there is no need to panic because some ActiveX controls may work fine as they are now, it depends how they were coded. -- Black, Grey and White Hats Unite here -> »testing.OnlyTheRightAnswers.com |
