One problem...

... until telcos can beat the distance limitations, cable will be better.

If some ISP would get off the stick and start pushing REAL fiber(think symetrical), then we will forever be doomed to yawnfest speeds.

There are ISPs with real connections out there, too bad they are small pockets.

Were i live there is Cox and SBC/att.I have a 9/1 line for 54.00 a month SBC has a 3/384 for i think 30 something.IMHO SBC is so top heavy and Slow and cheap they will never bring Fiber here and i will stay with Cox.Yea Cox has its bad points but for me it far better than the alternative. But Im always Open if att decides there going to stop sitting on there hands and do some real upgrades then its a whole new ballgame.

The 3/384 is currently 17.99 a month with a one year agreement if you sign up online...

In most of the cities cable access is being oversold multiple times and since it's a shared connection - unlike DSL or fiber -, your speed heavily depends on how many of your neighbors are using it with you. Check out those NYC topics in the Roadrunner forum...

As far as I know, cable has distance limitations as well, they just aren't as obvious as DSL.

Both types of services seem to have their tradeoffs. My biggest gripe is that both cable and DSL should be available "naked" of their other services. If I want cable internet, I shouldn't have to buy cabletv too, and if I want DSL I don't necessarily want POTS.

I agree. If Verizon or other companies would run fiber out to an area then I could get could speeds. Cable does this. But Verizon will not do that since they are working on FIOS. I will have to be more patient. Sick of paying Charter $42 a month for OK service.

News for Ya..
All internet service is "Shared" Connection.. It's only a matter of at what point it is shared.
It's all IP traffic. And it all takes the same IP route.

Yes but it does matter where it is shared. My speakeasy line was shared at the CO - and I never had a hiccup in speed. My Cox line was and is shared much closer, and speed takes a serious hit.

But alas, I am stuck with Cox for now - great speeds in the daytime - abysmal here at night.

I'd gladly pay my $80 more a month for my Speakeasy line if it was available.

I don't think that makes cable better, but it does make it more available.

Or re-rate. (Looks like if you try enough, you'll be able to get the re-rate).

And that 3/384 is actually 3/512. The 384 up is 1.5/384 with the current promo of 12.99/mo for a year.

So far I've had no problems with my 1.5/384 SBC/ATT DSL in a little over a month, waiting on the completion date for my 3/512 upgrade (tuesday). But then, in almost 6 years I've had little trouble with my Road Runner 3/384 and the only long-term (when it rained, for a couple months) was the cable mainline, not RR's fault. That was really the only problem I've had with cable so far, other service degradation issues were handled within a few days (but I'm not sure if they were mainline or not).

It all depends on your provider and node, RT, or CO which is your best deal. I think DSL is more interesting tech though. Coax was designed to carry RF. POTS copper was not, but it does for DSL.
