3com 3CR870-95 How do I Log events to a remote IP

My question is simple, yet elusive and not answered by 3com manuals or knowlege base ( I have tried )

I want to log firewall events to a remote server, but the only fields that show up to choose a remote server is an IP address field. I know some addresses I want to use (one is our domain controller running 2003 server and another is our buffalo tech storage device) but where the heck will the log end up on the remote machine that has that ip address? Because when I enter in the ip addresses i want to send the log to, the only information I can enter is the ip address, cant choose a directory on the remote unit or anything.

Thanks for your time

Hi there,
The remote logging option on the 3CR870 is to log messages to a syslog server, using the standard syslog protocol.

You would therefore expect to configure what to do with firewall messages in the syslog server, not on the firewall.

Hope that helps...
Bob

okay, been researching syslog a bit, is there a built in service in server 2003 that can act as a syslog server?

I don't think it does.

There are various syslog programs around on the web for windows, including one from 3Com
at
»ftp://ftp.3com.com/pub/utilbin/win32/3CSyslog.zip

I haven't used any of them so can't vouch for how good they are...

You can use Kiwi Syslog.

Okay thanks for those two suggestions. I'll take a look at them both and see if they do what I like!
