Yep.

It really is amazing how unaware people are of their security. I can connect to 5 different unsecured wifi points from my apartment alone.

Totally.
Sometimes after a restart my laptop it will automatically connect to my neighbors wifi. I only notice after sufring awhile and realize its slow. Either its just a bad connection or half my block is surfing on their dime.

Yeah, I've had the same thing happen to me, had to disable the auto-connect option.

Ah, totally what, sound like you don't know how to properly set up your connection. Why don't you set your WIFI to only connect to your router? I have several connections in my neighborhood, but my system never, ever auto connects to the wrong system. You should learn how to setup your own system before you run your big mouth.

Well that was harsh...

good for you.
not everyone using a computer is tech-savvy. trying tossing terms like Wi-fi, WEP, WPA, LAN, etc at an elderly lady and see if she'd understand.
that's why there are computer services and tech support.

if you were throw into a field you know nothing about, how would you react?

What I usually see is that 3rd party wireless utilities that ship with retail wireless NICs often do that (that is, connect to any AP).

With WZC in XP SP2, that behavior has been stopped. At worst, you'll see a "wireless networks detected" balloon pop-up alongside your wireless connection icon in the tray. Plus, you can even check to see that connecting to random APs is turned off in the dialog box in the screenshot.

I don't have many qualms about connecting to random APs. Often, it's hard to discern whether they're meant to be public, or if "joe user" just plugged in his new wireless router and forgot about it. What's important is what you do while you're using it. If you're being malicious, you deserve whatever legal trouble comes your way. For the same token however, if their AP is in it's default state, it's fair to assume that there aren't any logging features enabled on the device either. The result: you're anonymous.

I would read up on it, I would not just stay there lost. I think the boon around computers is somewhat of a self fulfilling prophecy. People don't take the time to learn simple (RTFM) directions step by step to ensure themselves some basic security.

But, we encourage stupidity in this country so I'm not surprised.

Run my BIG MOUTH? I stated I accidentally connect to neighbors as well.

Too lazy to set it to not auto connect. Its a laptop I use about once a week.
Where T F did I "run my big mouth" and what did I "run my big mouth" about sweetcheeks?

Wait a minute

Seems you have an answer for everything.

Well, what if the next latest greatest technological advance comes from some dis-advantaged poor sap sitting in his rundown studio apt who right now only able to educate himself for his future achievements by innocently sticking his virtual fangs in one small poorly utilized wireless "vein" of the web.

Ok, far-fetched impossibility aside. I think calling us vampires is a bit harsh. I mean as stated above many people use about 4% (1 hr out of 24) of their available connection anyway, the rest is just being wasted. I think leach is a much better term. I could live with Leach. Leaches don't kill their host organism and in fact sometimes actually provide beneficial results. like the guy above who has taken the time to secure his neighbors connections. That i good Samaritan mislabeled a vampire if i ever heard one!

Besides, if you broadcast any signal over "public airspace", you should know your rights AND responsibilities to protect yourself, your family, and others.

Exploitation of thy neighbor - isn't that the American way.
