I know this isn't a solution to having a good wireless security setup.

If the person is a total jerk then fine leave it alone but anyone else. -- Low voltage Tech's are wimps, Real tech's use 45 pound filament transformers, plate voltages no less then 2400 volts with at least 10 amp's lighting 8877 triodes...BPL I'm coming to get you.

If the person is a total jerk then fine leave it alone but anyone else. Technically... I could do that, but for one I don't know exactly what apartment each AP is in, and the other, I don't think any of my neighbors know me or even speak english. I would feel really awkward going around knocking on doors say "Is your SSID 'Joe's Network', and are you aware that you have no security enabled on it?"

It's pretty simple to physically locate an AP, especially with a laptop. All you need is the relative signal strength expressed numerical; are you can just ping the router and use the response times. Get 4 locations and you can do simple corrected triangulation. 5 locations should give you a fix within a few meters. -- ISCABBS - the oldest and largest BBS on the Internet telnet://whip.isca.uiowa.edu Professional Geographer Geographic Information Science researcher

Plus that still doesn't take care of the part where it's just really weird to knock on someones door and bug them about their internet connection, especially when they probably don't even know who I am.

| | | I have tried once but he person never got back to me. I was more than willing to secure their network for them. In addition, it does not help when so-called computer gurus on the radio telling uninformed users they can secure their network by turning off their SSID blocking mac addresses. | |

Do people go around and check neighbors car doors to see if they are locked and tell them when they find one unlocked? I don't... Not my yob. -- Think outside the Fox... Opera

Access their shared folder (I doubt that is secured either), and drop a note in their dropbox that their AP is unsecured and they should secure it or seek help to secure it.
When other thing to consider... if you are unfamiliar enough with your neighbors that it would be weird to knock on their door to bug them about their internet connection, do you really want to be sending unsecured traffic through their router? More and more "open" APs are popping up that are used for information theft (especially now that script kiddies can set them up), and if you are going to use the same AP regularly, then maybe it is important to know who is running it. -- ISCABBS - the oldest and largest BBS on the Internet telnet://whip.isca.uiowa.edu Professional Geographer Geographic Information Science researcher
