atuarreHere come the drumsPremium join:2004-02-14 College Station, TX | RE - Bandwidth Vampires I agree with another poster that said the neighbors are scum. Some people would likely say if you don't secure you wifi, then you get what you deserve, but we must remember that not everybody is as tech saavy as some of us, and just because you can do something, in this case, steal Wifi, doesn't mean that you should.
Stealing is stealing. | |
| | | Re: RE - Bandwidth Vampires DOES IT REALLY TAKE ALL THAT TECH SAVVYNESS TO RTFM. It is right there you know. Just because someone is to lazy doesn't make them a victim. Also how the heck should I know if that person's unsecured wifi was meant to be used by me. Maybe your nieghbor likes to share. How is it stealing? You are using unused bandwidth, which the user is not paying extra for. Anyway I buy Gpoobas aregument as to how the person who auto connects to someone's unsecured router is the victim. There are alot of reasons why it is perfectly ok to use an unsecured network. | |

As I stated earlier, some people, especially some of the older folks, are not as tech saavy. Perhaps they had someone install the Wifi for them, and they neglected to secure it.
Secondly...I don't agree that it is okay to use an unsecured network. If you engage in illegal activity, the police won't becoming after you, they will be coming after the person whose name is tied to that account.
Also, clearly because these peoples access was slower than normal, the people who were stealing access must have been doing something which was bandwidth intensive, like downloading music, or something else.
In my eyes, stealing broadband should be just like stealing cable, or telephone service.
If you have a login and password to a DoD system, that doesn't invite you access that system. If you know how to patch into the cable and get free cable, that doesn't mean that you should. The same is true in this situation. If a network is unsecured, and you don't know for a fact that it is open to sharing, then you shouldn't even attempt to get service from or gain access to it. I guess not taking advantage of people requires that you actually have morals which people seem to be lacking these days.

"Secondly...I don't agree that it is okay to use an unsecured network. If you engage in illegal activity, the police won't becoming after you, they will be coming after the person whose name is tied to that account."
Statement #1: Ok, so it's NOT ok to use an unsecured network. Statement #2: the Police won't come after you, they will come after the name on the account.
So, only criminals use unsecured networks is your first assertion. Police will go after the person whose name is on the account is your second assertion.
So, if MY unsecured network is used for illegal actions by a criminal, the police will come after ME! Thus, by NOT securing my network, the police have a right to come after me! Ergo, not securing MY wireless network is illegal!
Well, send out the jack booted homeland security goons, cause it's time to arrest a LOT of people now! -- Flabby? pastey-skinned? riddled with phlebitis? Then you've got a good Republican body! So compare your lives to mine, and then kill yourself.

Like I said earlier, it comes down to having morals or not. You can argue it till the cows come home. There are some businesses and stores who use Wifi and it's not secure, and if you use it, and abuse it to access data, and are caught, the argument your using now about the waves crossing your property won't be a legitimate one in court. I look at it, as stealing.
For example - If someone gets a direct tv access card in the mail, and it falls out of their mailbox, and you happen to be walking along the road, find it and pick it up, does this mean if you have a receiver and dish on your house, and just don't have an active account with DirectTV that you can use their access card to watch DirectTV? No, it does not.
Sorry, but I don't think too highly of people who steal from others, and I define using someones internet without their knowledge as stealing, just as if you were to run a patch cable from their house to yours to get on the Internet. You want Internet access, pay for it your damn self.
