The Ethicist

Randy Cohen, who writes the the New York Times' Ethicist column says "you may use but not overuse Wi-Fi hot spots you encounter". Mike Godwin of the EFF says "If you're driving around town and someone's left a node open and you pop on and use it just to download some e-mail, feel free". »journalism.berkeley.edu/projects···938.html

I agree. It's fine to hop on and check your e-mail.. if they wanted to secure their router, they would have put a password on it. Downloading files or using someone else's connection regularly probably indicates that you should pay for your own connection sometime.
