| Karl just holds a grudge because he's a gamer that should have bought an Alienware laptop instead of a PowerBook. I think that must have pushed him over the edge.
Neglecting to mention that the guy was *giving out shell accounts* is kind of silly and shows a blind "re-reporting" of a story that leaves out information that's critical to understand the issue at hand.
Anyhow, test.doit.wisc.edu remains unaltered after 30 minutes. -- Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity |

Actually, I stuck with it, and now really enjoy the Mac laptop. I've used it so incessantly, the keys have been falling off. Thanks for assuming the very worst though, that's always appreciated after six years of doing the news here.
The reality is I didn't see the SSH or shell account commentary until much later, at which time it was already being discussed. Nothing malicious or intentionally manipulative about it.
But even then, from the hacker's mouth: quote: "The rm-my-mac challenge was setup similar to how you would have a Mac acting as a server -- with various remote services running and local access to users... There are various Mac OS X hardening guides out there that could have been used to harden the machine, however, it wouldn't have stopped the vulnerability I used to gain access."

Even web hosting shops that open their Linux/BSD boxes up to customers (who are not necessarily interested in destroying the machine they're paying for) do EXTENSIVE hardening of the OS before opening up shell access. Years ago I was in charge of a few public unix shell servers. No matter which *nix you are running it is no easy task to keep local users from doing bad things. An OS like OS-X is a far cry from a "server OS" and certainly not any sane person's choice for a shell server. So if this dingbat thinks that OS-X makes for a great shell server... well he's not the brightest bulb.
He did get his 15 minutes pretty cheap though. -- Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity |
