Any luck with Netopia instalation?

Hi there!

Just got Netopia router "preconfigured" for Covad. Single IP address/PPPoE name and password. No gateway address, no DNS servers...

Tried to use "wizard setup". PPPoE option. Got authentication failed message. Tried to call Covad self installation support - they sent me to Digizip.

Anyone have any luck with netopia setup?

Yes, and no. Mine is set up and running, but it's PPP-OE w/no static IPs, DHCP on the LAN side.

I could get this for $12.99 1.5Mbps/512Kbps thru AT&T, or $17.99 6.0Mbps/768Kbps thru AT&T.

I'm not happy.

I am 100% stuck. Static IP does not work. 0.0.0.0 (DHCP, I assume. Damn, give me back my Cisco). connects me to 172.x.x.x address. Which is private network. Traceroute goes thru 192.x.x.x aka my router to 172.x.x.x aka remote host to 192.168.x.x aka WTF.

However DNS assigned by DHCP is working.

I guess tomorrow will be fun day of call waiting music.

PS: Now my netopia reset(?) to default settings. Interface looks completely different. Default address of router is 192.168.1.254. Don't use resetsku.exe from cd-rom.

BTW, if someone manage to start up the damn thing, can you please post walkthrough here?

Thanks.

That private network is Covad's DHCP server. I could set up static IPs, I just couldn't connect to the internet. I'm forced into PPP-OE, instead of the PPP-OA that I was promised. My 6.0/768 connection is in reality 3295/510.

I have had several disconnects while websurfing as well. NOT GOOD!

Latency is not improved either.

Ross, do you have more info on the $17.99 6.0Mbps/768Kbps thru AT&T deal?

Ross, I think I figured out how to setup static IP pool. Leave static IP in WAN at 0.0.0.0 and set up LAN to your pool. So LAN will be your actual static IP.

update on my Covad adventures:

1. Call to Digizip. Extesion 200. They sent me to Covad support. 877-426-8231.
2. Call to Covad. 20 minutes on hold. Some dude in India answered. English is my second language. So it was lot's of fun to communicate with him.
We tried to find my router @192.168.1.1 with no luck (because router is on 192.168.1.254, but it's impossible to explain it to him). After 30 minutes first CSR gave up. He transfered me to next level.
3. 15 minutes of lift music. Disconnected.
4. Call to Covad. 20 minutes call waiting.
5. Female voice. India. 55 minutes of 192.168.1.1 connections, netsh dumps, restarts, and more 192.168.1.1 connections.
6. She gave up on me and transfered to higher level.
7. 15 minutes of call waiting.
8. Indian guy.
9. 50 more minutes of 192.168.1.1, netsh, restarts, ipconfig
10. "Sorry we can't help you". We recomend to order professional router installation. It will cost you $199.
11. Can you transfer me to higher level of support? - No. this is the highest level. We can't help you.

12. Nasty call to Digizip incoming.

I will not pay 200 for this bullshit.

/angry.

Please go ahead and post it. What's the stability like? Are you using PPPoA? Did you pay the extra $$$ for 6M/768?

It's too early to say something about stability. 3 hours stable so far. It's PPPoE. And I pay +$35/month for additional bandwidth.

Just great! I guess I better start looking for another ISP. Going through all this trouble just because Digizip decided to move us to Covad is not worth it. I never really had problem with Digizip in the past but I will find out this coming up Monday. Several question?

-So are we losing the static IP because of this move? Or do we still have the 5 assigned IPs?
-Do we return the existing Cisco?

You keep the cisco. Digizip had to move everyone to covad because MCI/Worldcom is leaving the dsl business.
If your ppp login ends in @bz8 you get 5 static ips.
I switched to a different provider.

First of all, most of my troubles was self-inflicted. I screwed my router firmware. If you just use what you get in the UPS box, most likely, you wont get into any troubles.

Only tricky part is static IP block settings. You have to put your IP block into LAN settings. Which causes some confusion.
But rest is pretty much straight forward.

PS: Connection is stable so far. 12 hours. No disconnections. Slight improvement in ping and definately major boost in speed.

Who did you switch to. How much? What speed?

Serge, how's the stability? Do you have 5 usable IPs or just 4 like previously?

I started looking for ISPs with static ips that weren't a part of the big telcos when I first got digizip's email. I then switched to Cyberonic. Their 6.0/768 was much cheaper than any other dsl provider. I ask for and got the VIP deal. So far, no problems with my connection.

You got Cyberonic VIP deal at 6.0Mbps/768Kbps for what price? Pre-paid year, or 12mo. contract paid by the month? What is your actual speed?

$46/month I didn't ask about pre-paid or month-by-month. It doesn't matter to me either way. John, the guy that I called, was reluctant to give me that offer until he confirmed with Tom that Tom agreed to set me up with the VIP offer.

Speeds are great and very stable. Distance from CO is ~7000ft.
