speed

I'm sorry but if anyone is testing there speed here, you really need to open your eyes! I used to a LONG time ago check my speed here, but I have sinse moved up to the NDT Servers. Google for NDT Server, and they are AT LEAST 1GB/1GB backbone connected servers and can handle your speed, and that is all they are used for is speed tests. They will even tell you if something is wrong with your connection. I'm not trying to bash BBR, but lets face it, I am on 5000/384 and when I test here I get 2800/129. I test on Testmy.net and I get 5400/372, huge difference and it wont matter when I test here or over at testmy.net, or on an NDT server. NDT Servers are the MOST reliable way to test your speed. Anyone who says they are required to get XXXMbps on a residential circuit needs there head examined, you will never get guaranteed service from residential providers.

if you want reliable speed results go to testmy.net or google for NDT Server, do not test your speed here its not a correct result, anyone who has tested else where knows its true!

Give me speed

I believe if you're on the upper tier of a multiple tier provider you should get a 'mini sla' of "at least the speed of the lower tier and up to the caps of your current tier.
-
example: i have cox's premiere that caps at 9000 down and 1000 up, the lower tier is 6000 down and 512 up which is the minimum i should be getting

You can never be too rich, too thin or have too much Bandwidth

I think most users would agree that there should be some sort of standard set up for these tiered plans. Of course the providers are only giving us a small fraction of advertised service. I dont have a problem with this but in some cases most users really dont know what speed they should be getting and we are not talking about the usual bombardment of users online at any one point of time. All they know is that they are getting faster than dial up or somewhat faster. There should be a standard and if the providers dont like it too bad. I guess you could look at like this if you went to a restaurant and you ordered a steak and they brought you out a hamburger most people would not be happy. No one is arguing that we should be expecting a full T1 line access when we pay for 8mb dsl/cable line. Users just want a good experience and not feel that they are getting half of something. Users should expect this in the first place not the providers giving up some sort of secret or something.

Now that I agree with. Besides occasional dips you should be seeing speeds above what the next tier below is. I pay for 8 with Comcast therefore I should rarely see anything below 6 otherwise I should at least be refunded the extra $10.00 I pay each month. Problem would be at what point would one request a refund?

@147.21.x.x

I complained to the California Public Utilities Commission about very very very slow speeds (dialup speeds on a 3Mbit line) in the Los Angeles area with AT&T/SBC. Their routers were completely exhausted, their service oversold.

Of course, I had to go through hell and back talking to their incompetent morons in India for 2 months.. til I was fed up and took it to the CPUC.

Once they got my complaint from CPUC.. AT&T/SBC called me and helped me fix the problem by moving my account to a less crowded router... within days.

like for instance if you have 1.5m/384k dsl and your buddy has the same thing and you download from him you are going to get 384 at best. even though your down speed is 1.5, his upload is only 384, so you will get 384. and even less than that if he has any other applications taking up any bandwidth.
Thats wh ythey need to give more upload.
the 1544/384 should be for newbies just getting on the band wagon from dial up.
the 3008/512 should be 3008/1504 for expirenced users.
the 6008/608 should be 6008/3004 for experinced users.
They SHould really real world test this scenerio.

That's like being on the east coast and testing your speed from a speedtest site in California

I have and it doesn't make a diffrence i can get the same results say testing to santa clara that i get testing to richardson.

Santa Clara
Your Throughput

Download = 4.992 Mbps
Upload = 484.90 kbps
Richardson

Your Throughput

Download = 5.062 Mbps
Upload = 484.84 kbps

Chicago
Your Throughput

Download = 5.009 Mbps
Upload = 485.73 kbps

These results were with 32 Instant messanger conections.
3 of them Yahoo Chat rooms.
Launch Cast Using IE
39 tabs open on this instance of Opera.
60 other tabs dispersed on 6 other instances of Opera
Pretty good results on all 3 of those speed test considering what I have running Oh and look how close they are to each other.

the thing that really gets me is if i close everything out It doesn't Improve One would think it would IMO.

You see, that's how it is suppoed to work. If you read the not-so-informed-I-dont-have-a-problem-with-my-speeds-never-have-never-will posts above, those people will never understand. I live in the SF Bay area and had the same problem with SBC. I was blamed for my router, blamed for having spyware, blamed for almost everything in the world before they came out not 2 but 3 times to check my lines. The tech said your lines are clean, you're within 500 feet of the CO, I dont see what the problem is. I said, well there is only a problem from 3pm-midnight. at 7am, its fast as hell. I was on 2 congested routers before I decied to pay some other ISP my money (dslextreme.com) since then, NO problems whatsoever. So all the nay-sayers, can kiss my butt, if I didn't have a choice in ISPs, my only resouse would be the PUC, so this *IS* needed, very badly.
